I just bought a Surface RT, and updated to 8.1. My PC says it's set to automatically update, and it's not providing me with any obvious way to disable automatic updates.
Automatic updates for a computer's operating system have proven irritating and problematic for me in the past, and I would like to avoid that headache if at all possible.
Please for the love of God tell me I can disable automatic updates.

Basically, Microsoft support will only post what there told to post.
This is how you turn Auto Updates on or off on Windows RT.
5. Click disable and apply.
Turn it on in the same way.

My Surface RT automatically installed updates but then said that the updates failed and uninstalled them all. (the message was "We couldn't complete the updates. Undoing Changes")...

PS: Can you "turn off updates?" I don't think so.
That's one avenue, but it's certainly less than ideal. Optimally we could correct whatever has happened and let you continue receiving important updates.
The first step I'd take, if you haven't already done so, is to use the built-in Windows Update diagnostic troubleshooter. To find it, just type "troubleshooting" into your Search charm/start screen, open the resulting Control Panel page it finds and then go to View all > Windows Update troubleshooter. It will attempt to detect common issues, reset components and try to get it working again. Even if it fails, it will collect some diagnostic info that will help us help you better as well. Please let me know the result either way.

It then did the same thing again so every time I turn my surface off, I have to wait about an hour or two before I can use it again.
Should I Just turn off updates?
