Cant use windows 8.1 Windows Easy Transfer on Windows 8.1

What kind of f'in madness is this from M$? I'm not looking to back up my music collection! I don't even own a damn Xbox and I never will. What I do have is 10GB of photos that I need transferred from my 8.1 to my former girlfriend's Windows 7 machine. I have is a USB 2 Host-to-Host link adapter cable that I bought a couple of years ago and plugged it into her Win 7 box. Magically Windows 7's WET popped right up and said that it's ready to go. I haven't used this cable since I upgraded to 8.1. I look at my 8.1 screen expecting to see the same - nope - nothing. So I go looking for it and it's AWOL. Getting pissed I started looking online and landed here and found out that M$ screwed me.

I am not about to upload 10GB of photos to SkyDrive and then download them to her Win 7 box. To **** with that lunacy.

Does anyone know of another way to help me out of my dilemma? I'm sure there are several ways - none of them involving backing up my files (I have that covered already, M$) nor my imaginary Xbox. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

You COMPLETELY miss his point.  First off, from a simple minded see-task-do-task perspective, SkyDrive aka OneDrive are utterly useless for migrating from an old machine to a new one.  I have roughly 500 GB of material in my profile and documents spaces that would take *years* to move via OneDrive, much less allocating that much space on a paid-for basis on OneDrive.  For another, Mr. Felt's point that the typical user doesn't even know which files to move nor where to find them needs to be HEARD by Microsoft, ie the beauty of WET was the user transparency, a sort of brain transplant function.  

On the larger issue, MS has indeed lost it's corporate vision - chasing the consumer market is dumb when it means abandoning your core business, which is Business.  Granted many many people are now working as individuals or small start ups and need business technology suited to getting work done without a department full of high-priced technology techs at hand.  Ie MS needs to eliminate the arcanery of Windows while keeping the we're-about-real-work competencies of the system.  The reason I persist in using Windows, despite my colleagues having switched to Apple long ago, is that I can cope with the mind-boggling arcanery and so am able to get lots more work done, at the end of the day.

Is that understood?

I fully agree but I dont think they will listen.  In the end I had no choice but to migrate back to windows 7 and there I will stay until this issue is fixed and a satisfactory option is available.  I did the upgrade to windows 8 then migrated to new machine then upgraded to windows 8.1 then needed to change hard drives and do a clean install only to find out that wet was unavailable in 8.1 to help me do this.  Really pissed with this and I believe I am not alone and now windows 7 is the most common windows operating system and will continue as this is just one of the many reasons why people have reverted back to win 7 and if win 9 does not fix the issue Microsoft will be a dead and dying business.  I believe the initial growth in win 8 has now been exceeded by growth in win 7 as people revert there machines back to windows 7 getting totally fed up with microsoft placing an advertising platform/overlay on there machine to take control of there systems and removing so many of the tools needed to manage there systems...nobody likes it.  Windows 9 or 10 will all be dead ducks if these issues are not fixed and Microsoft will die and as much as i think apple is worse than Microsoft for this type of stupidity they will reap the reward of microsoft trying to copy Apple behavior........

Indeed!  The Metro UI is really powerful and I am astounded at the performance of my WinPhone so I see it in my best interest to push on them about their stupidity.  I am in the business of innovation and watching them fumble with the platforms that they are betting on is irritating, especially since I know that they are on the right track and their internal Marketing politics-in-leadership-vacume are what's killing them.  Kinda makes me think of the Lord of the Flies.

Is utterly clear that MS core business advantage is getting-work-done,  and they are seriously jeopardizing that with the crazy push to attack the consumer play market.  Yes, XBox360 is their star product but that doesn't put them in the business, it is a wake-up call that what works, and why it works, is what they need to pursue.

I think you can use the old Windows 8 easy transfer tool (not the crippled 8.1 version). You'll find it on the Windows 8 installation disk.

The path is:

D:\support\migwiz

Replace D with what ever drive letter your disk (or disk image) is mounted on.

The windows 8 disc image is fairly easy to download from Microsoft if you have a product key.

This seems to work. Transferred everything from a Windows 8.1 PC to an external drive. It should work transferring it back to a Windows 8.1 PC, but haven't tried it. Thanks for the suggestion.
