Cant use windows 8.1 Windows Easy Transfer on Windows 8.1

Your idea probably will not work.  Grab a copy of the easy transfer file program migwiz.exe from windows 7 or 8 disk or working system and login with safe mode into 8.1 and use a program like eraser http://eraser.heidi.ie/  to delete the 8.1 easy transfer migwiz.exe file and replace with older version that will then work.  This is really your only option that actually works but getting the 8.1 migwiz file to delete so you can replace it is not as easy as people would like.  We can only hope that Microsoft brings back the full wet system in windows 10

You were right. When I tried to install the program it said that I didn't have admin rights. I will do what you have recommended. I want to transfer about 7GB of music and 8GB of photos and another 700Gb of video files to my secondary PC. I cant see doing that with Sky Drive or a flash drive. Connecting the two computers with my cable sure makes a lot more sense to me than those other options.

Judith 123 and anyone else - I just did a search for a "free easy transfer cable software" and I received several hits. This one from Microsoft. Have any of you tried to install this onto 8.1 yet? I'm willing to try it. As soon as I can find my cable that is.

I could not agree more, I have been administering windows 7 and now that i need to create "Easy transfers"  (Now I name them hard transfers) on windows 8.1 I can't as before. This is terrible. I like Windows products but why we get less when we should be getting more on a "improved system"!, no easy transfers, no easy burning on DVDs... My free Linux can do more than 8.1

Say - Where did you get the disk with the Easy Transfer tool? Did it come with the cable? I may have to go do some digging in my old DVDs - unfortunately I'd begun tossing many of them for needed space.  Hopefully I will get lucky.

I just purchased the Easy transfer cable to do a WET from an old Vista laptop to a Windows 8 laptop. Nowhere was it noted that 8.1 removed the actual option that I wanted to utilize!  I have enough data stored that copying and  loading via flash drive simply was not an option and I don't want to use the SkyDrive.  I want to do this at my desktop, nice and personal.  What an absolute pain!  Before I purchased the cable, I made sure that I had the WET on both laptops (Which I did), so how was I to know that the installation disk and cable would not work?  It was for older software including Vista to transfer to Windows 8.  This is very inconsiderate!  Like another user, I upgraded to a new laptop with Windows 8 on it.  Why do I get penalized for updating to 8.1?
