"Couldn't update to Windows 8.1 - 0xC1900101 - 0x40017"

Dell Inspiron 15R (three months old -Haswell i5)

Seagate Momentus XT 500GB SSHD

Windows 8 64 Bit

All Windows & device updates applied; BIOS updated.

All startup services disabled via msconfig; clean boot tried.

No peripherals attached.

Error 0xc1900101 0x20017 when updating to 8.1

At least 8 attempts.

I'm up to at least 6 try's now still getting  Error 0xc1900101 0x20017 right at the end of the installation,

 I have tried Clean boot installed all drivers its happening with custom builds as well as factory machines

maybe it might have something to do with the SSHD drive set up I know I have win8 pro on that drive all other programs are on another drive did you just have the one drive attached ?

Still no joy 6 try's  now I have done all the suggested fixes

Hello, I have an xps15 also, tried the update and it failed, would make it past windows splash screen but hangs there, it reverted back with the error code 0xc1900101-0x40017.  Have you tried again or are you just going to wait a few days and see if MS fixes?  My email is *** Email address is removed for privacy ***, thanks Ron

Same issue with Dell XPS 15. It's about one year old i7, 16GB, 512 ssd. It did all available updates but it still boots to blank. After a few restarts it rolls back to Win8. I have an open Dell support ticket. Dell spent 2hrs with me in chat support but only really helped me get up and running back on 8.

I really appologize for the delay in responding to this thread. This issue is caused by a driver bug check during second boot while installing Windows 8.1. I request you to check if all the updates are installed on the computer via Windows Update before you start with the Windows 8.1 installation. It would be great if you can provide more information regarding this issue:

 

1)       What is the make and model of the computer?

2)       Do you have any external devices (except the mouse and the keyboard) connected to the computer?

3)       Are you using any third party security program installed on the computer?

 

You may try the following methods and check if that helps.

 

Method 1: Disconnect all the unnecessary external devices connected to the computer (except the mouse and the keyboard)

 

Please disconnect all the unnecessary external devices connected to the computer (except the mouse and the keyboard) and then check if you still face this issue while installing Windows 8.1. This is to check if the issue is caused by any external devices connected to the computer.

 

You may also try installing all the driver updates for all the devices installed on the computer and check if that resolves the issue. You may try the next methods and let’s know the result.

My 8.1 update failed to install on both my Office & Home PC's.  After a very long download & installation process I just received a message saying 8.1 had failed to install and the PC had reverted to Windows 8 - no reason given.  Tried the Microsoft support line but after going through all the options & long periods of on-hold music etc got through to an overseas call centre with a bad line and someone who could not understand/hear me.  The whole Microsoft operation seems very amateurish.  We have spent a lot of money on Microsoft products but now considering Apple Macs as I have enjoyed using iphone, ipod & ipad, Apple's product support is excellent.
