"Couldn't update to Windows 8.1 - 0xC1900101 - 0x40017"

I have downloaded the Windows 8.1 update from the store but cannot get it to install. Each time I try, I get to the point where it is "getting my devices ready", then the PC restarts to a blue screen with error message. It then tries to recover the installation, fails, then restores Windows 8. When the system boots up after this, I get a message saying:

"Couldn't update to Windows 8.1

Sorry, we couldn't complete the update to Windows 8.1. We've restored your previous version of Windows to this PC.

0xC1900101 - 0x40017"

There is n o explanation as to why the update could be completed. Any ideas how to resolve this?

Well, I can add that Microsoft support is pretty darn good (I'll give them that much).  They spent three hours on the phone while controlling my PC.  While almost everything they tried I had done previously, I was surprised at the patience and diligence of support to sit there through each of my lengthy boots and the long process of watching 8.1 trying to install.

My issue has been escalated to tier 2 support, and they are going to continue with me tomorrow.  I'm trying to take notes to see if there is any one thing that stands out in what they do (assuming this gets fixed).

I have the same problem on my XPS 15. Do you know if there is a solution yet?

check your driver for NVIDIA thru GeForce Experience. Driver 331.58 is the most recent/ compatible with Win8.1.I updated to that and it went smoothly. If it still doesn't work, check driver updates on Dells website for your rig and see if there is any and install. This seems to be an incompatible driver issue , you just need the updated drivers. unfortunately all the companies are still scrambling to do that so it isn't working for everybody yet

I had a different error code but I ran chkdsk/r at cmd promt and after allowing this to run at start up and waiting about an hour for the disk check and repair and another reboot I was able to install 8.1

    good luck

Same deal for me but with AMD/ATi Catalyst drivers likely at fault.

Adding another voice to the throng.

It seems AMD updated their Mobility drivers yesterday.

I tried updating my drivers again to this latest, but it still did not work for me. But, perhaps this can help some people with other configurations:

    Hi

Do a repair of your windows 8 (Inplace Upgrade). Once the upgrade is completed remove all the 3rd party antivirus programs. Install all the updates from store and windows update. Run a disk cleanup and cleanup all the files including the system files from disk clean up and then try to install windows 8.1 this works.

    Thanks
