"Couldn't update to Windows 8.1 - 0xC1900101 - 0x40017"

I have downloaded the Windows 8.1 update from the store but cannot get it to install. Each time I try, I get to the point where it is "getting my devices ready", then the PC restarts to a blue screen with error message. It then tries to recover the installation, fails, then restores Windows 8. When the system boots up after this, I get a message saying:

"Couldn't update to Windows 8.1

Sorry, we couldn't complete the update to Windows 8.1. We've restored your previous version of Windows to this PC.

0xC1900101 - 0x40017"

There is n o explanation as to why the update could be completed. Any ideas how to resolve this?

Same for me. Downloaded the update via Windows Store, installed and rebooted to a black screen.

Powered off and on, pressed F8 and then got the same message:

    "Couldn't update to Windows 8.1

    XPS 15 Laptop, i7, 8Gb RAM, Win 8Pro

Called Dell Pro Support and they believe it is an Nvidia driver issue, but due to the number of people having the same problem said it's probably best to wait for Microsoft to offer a fix as it has been logged with them.

The update has been a long time coming and been through preview so it should work, obviously I'm delusional and live in dreamland.

Just to confirm, I don't have Steelseries software installed and never have, so this isn't the definite resolution for the issue. However, really glad it worked for you :)

     Guys, from Microsoft own mouth-

"I really appologize for the delay in responding to this thread. This issue is caused by a driver bug check during second boot while installing Windows 8.1. "

     that's all we can do

This is the problem, once they fix it, we get Win8.1. Just be patient. Try again in a few days that's all we can do
