"Couldn't update to Windows 8.1 - 0xC1900101 - 0x40017"

I have downloaded the Windows 8.1 update from the store but cannot get it to install. Each time I try, I get to the point where it is "getting my devices ready", then the PC restarts to a blue screen with error message. It then tries to recover the installation, fails, then restores Windows 8. When the system boots up after this, I get a message saying:

"Couldn't update to Windows 8.1

Sorry, we couldn't complete the update to Windows 8.1. We've restored your previous version of Windows to this PC.

0xC1900101 - 0x40017"

There is n o explanation as to why the update could be completed. Any ideas how to resolve this?

    Error 0xC1900101 - 0x40017 is caused by a driver error during boot.  To install Windows 8.1, try these solutions that have worked for some customers so far:

     

    1. Make sure all drivers have been updated prior to installing Windows 8.1.
    2. Check for and uninstall the SteelSeries Engine software, which is currently not supported in Windows 8.1.  See this link for a list of hardware devices that use the SteelSeries Engine.
    3. If your PC contains NVIDIA GeForce graphics cards, update to Windows 8.1-compatible drivers by visiting this blog containing direct links to the compatible drivers.

    Does NOT work for me. As stated in prior post, I have double checked everything and NOTHING fixes the install error. ALL drivers are up to date and there is nothing else I can do until this trash is fixed. MS has REALLY been making consumers PO recently and it seems nothing has changed on their side.

    As others have pointed out, these issues arose in the PREVIEW and still NOT fixed. VERY poor coding and one of the worst roll outs I have seen since Vista or worse!

    NVIDIA has finally added the driver to their update system, installing now, hopefully it will work and I will get to be one of the few enjoying 8.1, but I agree, worst roll out since Vista, hopefully unlike Vista the problems will be fixed instead of being left behind and moving on to the next idea

    While I agree with the others that it's disappointing to see things rehashed, this response does give me one more (well, actually two more) ideas:

    1.  I never thought to install an 8.1 driver on an 8.0 machine.  If that's what you're saying, perhaps I'll try that.
    2.  The consistent pointing at NVidia made me think that perhaps what the previous poster had said is what needs to be tried:  Removing the card and updating with built in graphics.  Unfortunately my board is an nforce board which *likely* means that the built in graphics are NVidia, leaving me with no alternative to update my machine.

    Forgetting every manufacturer except Intel integrated was quite the oversight for MS, don't you think?

    I had to UNINSTALL both of my graphics cards and remove the drivers, then do the upgrade, and then install the updated drivers for both.

    It DID NOT work for me with the latest drivers installed prior to trying the upgrade.

    The uninstall didn't work for me... Did you try the preview ones, or the 331?  I am going to try removing the card entirely, but with an nforce board, I doubt that will get me anywhere...

    I had problems trying to install win 8 pro to 8.1 giving me error messages as well. On restarting told me couldn't install and rolled back to win 8. Took me 3 hours to download. Solved problem by reinstalling 8 pro and updating everything and reactivating windows. Downloaded 8.1 again [another 3 hours] and it installed with no hitches at all. I know it is a bit of a chore to have to go to this amount of trouble. But am very happy with 8.1. Hope this is helpful
