"Couldn't update to Windows 8.1 - 0xC1900101 - 0x40017"

I have downloaded the Windows 8.1 update from the store but cannot get it to install. Each time I try, I get to the point where it is "getting my devices ready", then the PC restarts to a blue screen with error message. It then tries to recover the installation, fails, then restores Windows 8. When the system boots up after this, I get a message saying:

"Couldn't update to Windows 8.1

Sorry, we couldn't complete the update to Windows 8.1. We've restored your previous version of Windows to this PC.

0xC1900101 - 0x40017"

There is n o explanation as to why the update could be completed. Any ideas how to resolve this?

    i had the same issue on a bootcamp windows 8 install on a mac. for me, the problem was the steelseries software steelseries provided with their gaming mice. uninstalling it solved that and allowed me to upgrade with no issues. partly my lack of paying attention, but i'd double check any software that comes with devices, such as printer software and the like

    I also have an Intel RST raid controller although not for my primary disk which is an SSD running on a Microsoft AHCI driver (via PCI card). The RST controls a couple of non-RAID larger conventional disks. It's a Dell which needs the special Intel drivers to install operating systems although using the PCI card got around that. It was a bit fiddly when I upgraded and did a clean install to 8. 

    The Intel drivers seem a likely candidate.

    Ok, a quick update from me. Problem solved!

    I installed the most recent Nvidia driver and temporarily disabled my AVG anti-virus. Re-installed Windows 8.1 without incident second time around. I am pretty convinced in my case that the NVidia driver was the fault so if you are having difficulties

    • as others have said - this should be your first port of call. 8.1 is much improved over 8 so I am happy that I persevered with this. Good luck if you are still having issues

    I had the NVidia 8.1 drivers installed before I tried and I tried it with AV disabled... no joy... from what I'm reading here, it's mostly speculation, and a few successes... for me, I think its a bug in the installer which I hope the big dopes fix pretty soon...

    Are there any users with this problem without Nvidia graphics? 

    Yes, I'm getting it with AMD card and I have the very latest drivers which claim to be Windows 8.1 compatible installed.

    I am also using an AMD card with the latest graphic drivers...
