"Couldn't update to Windows 8.1 - 0xC1900101 - 0x40017"

I have downloaded the Windows 8.1 update from the store but cannot get it to install. Each time I try, I get to the point where it is "getting my devices ready", then the PC restarts to a blue screen with error message. It then tries to recover the installation, fails, then restores Windows 8. When the system boots up after this, I get a message saying:

"Couldn't update to Windows 8.1

Sorry, we couldn't complete the update to Windows 8.1. We've restored your previous version of Windows to this PC.

0xC1900101 - 0x40017"

There is n o explanation as to why the update could be completed. Any ideas how to resolve this?

    the Samsung is probably due to another reason, Samsung released a

    BIOS update the same day Microsoft release win8.1. so win8.1 wasn't ready for Samsung's new BIOS and crashed on that. That will probably take longer then the driver bug unfortunately. as soon as I find out more trust me I will congratulate Microsoft and let all you folks know

    Hello, I have an xps15 also, tried the update and it failed, would make it past windows splash screen but hangs there, it reverted back with the error code 0xc1900101-0x40017.  Have you tried again or are you just going to wait a few days and see if MS fixes?  My email is ******@hotmail.com, thanks Ron

    Hey everyone,

    I found a solution at least for me.

    I had the same problem from upgrading to windows 8.1 from 8. I also have a customized PC which has a Gigabyte motherboard, I7-2600k, and GTX 670.

    Most of the time when I get to "Setting up a few more things" either at 3% or 93%, my PC just freeze (not responding no matter the time). Other times when I get to "apply PC settings", the same thing happens. After I force shutdown, it would come back and restore to windows 8 and give a similar message.  0xC1900101 - 0x40000 (the last number sometimes changes).

    The followed any advice I can gather from the internet.

    1. just simple re-install.
    2. tired "wsreset"
    3. removed everything except for my mouse. (yes even the keyboard and speaker)
    4. disable all startup, disable all non Microsoft services from msconfig
    5. disable my anti-virus which is windows defender
    6. after reading this post, I realized Martin and I have the same graphic card, so I also disable that.

    ALL FAILS. 

    BUT suddenly, something flashed through my mind. I remember when I first installed windows 8, my wireless PCI adapter (TL-WN851ND) was not compatible. I would experience "a permanent freeze" every time something tries to access the internet.. In the end, I disabled & uninstalled the driver from the safe mode, and download and install the driver for the adapter in compatibility mode.

    So

    1. I disabled the driver my wireless PCI adapter in windows 8, and used another wireless usb adapter for connecting to the internet.
    2. I tired to install windows 8.1, SUCCESS!!!
    3. Then just after I logged in , my computer experienced the same "a permanent freeze" and I have to force shutdown.
    4. I went to the SAFE mode, and found out my wireless PCI adapter (which I just disable in windows 8 before the upgrade) is ENABLED.
    5. Even more strange, the driver for the adapter is updated to 5/3/2013 even TPlink (a horrible company) hasn't roll out a drive update since 8/25/2011!!
    6. I uninstall the driver in the safe mode, uninstalled it, and install the 8/25/2011 driver in the compatibility mode. And everything WORKS now.

    In the end, I think this is probably a driver issue

    1. Upgrade all the drivers.
    2. go to Device Manager, disable the network adapter if you have TPlink (you will need a alternative way to connect to the internet), disable others drivers that may installed in the compatibility mode.
    3. Try to install 8.1.
    4. If windows 8.1 is successfully installed, but computer crashes afterwards, go to safe mode, find that driver, disable it again, and install it in compatibility mode.
