"Couldn't update to Windows 8.1 - 0xC1900101 - 0x40017"

I have downloaded the Windows 8.1 update from the store but cannot get it to install. Each time I try, I get to the point where it is "getting my devices ready", then the PC restarts to a blue screen with error message. It then tries to recover the installation, fails, then restores Windows 8. When the system boots up after this, I get a message saying:

"Couldn't update to Windows 8.1

Sorry, we couldn't complete the update to Windows 8.1. We've restored your previous version of Windows to this PC.

0xC1900101 - 0x40017"

There is n o explanation as to why the update could be completed. Any ideas how to resolve this?

I had similar issues trying to upgrade my Win 8 Pro to 8.1. Initially, had an I/O error 0xc00000e9. Later, it was another (I didn't document it). Removed all connection but mouse & keyboard --same result -- Return to 8.0. Did a "repair" -- same. Did a "refresh" -- same. Lost a lot of saved email history when outlook was removed.

Then, on a "let's do something" lark, I disconnected & reconnected my 1 TB HDD. Voila!!! IT Worked. 8.1 installed without further problems.

Next task(s) is reinstalling all the programs that were removed during "refresh".

    I hope this helps someone.

None of these have worked for me and have spent several hours trying various things IN ADDITION TO all of the above MS-Engineering notes.

    • Windows 8 Pro with Media Center
    • Dell Studio laptop  - 8gb RAM/320gb SSD about 40% free space/10gb System Partition
    • All Win8.0 updates drivers, patches installed. Says no more Updates available.
    • NO DEVICES OR HARD DRIVES OR PHONES plugged into laptop. Any other devices have been removed from Device Manager.
    • Removed all EXTRA devices in Device Manager.
    • Tried safe/clean boot -- made no difference.

    Also tried ...

    • Remove ATI video driver and Catalyst software so that it uses the MS driver. Made no difference.
    • Did wsreset at all intervals between all the various (read: hours) of steps -- made no difference.
    • Removed any extra third-party tools, mini-apps, etc. Difference? Made no difference.
    • Started in low-resolution mode: Made no difference.
    • Disabled WiFI and also removed Wifi driver relied only on Ethernet cable during install. No difference.
    • Windows Firewall service OFF and Defender OFF. Did it make a difference? No. No difference.
    • Did SFC /snannow from Admin Command Prompt -- made no difference
