"Couldn't update to Windows 8.1 - 0xC1900101 - 0x40017"

I have downloaded the Windows 8.1 update from the store but cannot get it to install. Each time I try, I get to the point where it is "getting my devices ready", then the PC restarts to a blue screen with error message. It then tries to recover the installation, fails, then restores Windows 8. When the system boots up after this, I get a message saying:

"Couldn't update to Windows 8.1

Sorry, we couldn't complete the update to Windows 8.1. We've restored your previous version of Windows to this PC.

0xC1900101 - 0x40017"

There is n o explanation as to why the update could be completed. Any ideas how to resolve this?

Samsung Chronos series 7 laptop. Install of 8.1 seemed to go ok until reboot. Then got stuck in a reboot loop and finally got f10 to respond during one cycle with option to boot from dvd. Chose hard disk and got the message that 8.1 install failed, restoring 8.0. Then booted up ok in 8.0, and everything seemed normal. Shut down overnight. On restart - boot loop started again, but this time no f key will respond. £1000 laptop now a paperweight...

Same error with multiple attempts to upgrade (through Store) from Preview 8.1 on Samsung series 7 (i7) notebook, with updated drivers. Appears to work fine until the last stage stage when confronted with gray screen and zero hard drive activity. Successfully performed the same upgrade on AMD 8 core based desktop running 2 Radeon 7780 cards. Will wait a few days and try again ...

Frankly, was a bit surprised that Microsoft described upgrade from Preview as requiring reinstallation of "Apps". I interpreted that as referring to the screwy App things on the Windows 8 start page, but no, it means all application programs, so the usual many hours of work restoring the computer. Microsoft is now being a little bit more straightforward about this. But, in case anyone is thinking this only involves re-downloading Metro Apps from Store - it does not.

I've had this problem also and I think I've found a solution at least for my configuration.

I attempted to upgrade three computers - one desktop system and two laptops.  The desktop system was successful, the two laptops both failed.  The difference was the desktop has a wired network connection and the two laptops both have wireless network connections.  I retried the upgrade on one of the laptops with a wired connection and it worked fine.  The problem seems to be with a wireless network connection - when it attempts to reboot with a wireless network connection, it can't connect to the router and fails.
