"Couldn't update to Windows 8.1 - 0xC1900101 - 0x40017"

I have downloaded the Windows 8.1 update from the store but cannot get it to install. Each time I try, I get to the point where it is "getting my devices ready", then the PC restarts to a blue screen with error message. It then tries to recover the installation, fails, then restores Windows 8. When the system boots up after this, I get a message saying:

"Couldn't update to Windows 8.1

Sorry, we couldn't complete the update to Windows 8.1. We've restored your previous version of Windows to this PC.

0xC1900101 - 0x40017"

There is n o explanation as to why the update could be completed. Any ideas how to resolve this?

    I updated every possible driver for all devices, still nothing

    this has been the last routine I followed, It doesn't work for me, I tried twice but nothing. And Microsoft it's not answering, I paid for a product and now I get this terrible customer service. I've to say I'm really **** off right now

    Does it make any sense at all that a huge company like Microsoft has an update for their

    OWN product and yet leaves it up to consumers to figure out how to get it to work??

    Microsoft is everywhere - much like Apple.  An update should take what is in the original

    and tweak it - not make consumers CRAZY ANGRY!!  So frustrating. 

    I'm very concerned if they do another update to 8.1 - which they surely will - what then?

    Why is not anyone from Microsoft giving any of us answers??

    I can understand computer glitches. No problem. What I CANNOT understand is the windows msg, "an error has occurred" but not explain the error so it can be fixed. Unforgivable.
