"Couldn't update to Windows 8.1 - 0xC1900101 - 0x40017"

I tried many different "solutions" and I was getting very very frustrated until I found this post:

"I ended up calling Microsoft and they were able to guide me through some steps and we were able to fix the issue with the update. I wanted to post these steps in case anyone else is having the same problem.

• Run sfc /scannow
• Check for Windows Updates
• Open Device Manager and update the Network Driver
• Run all updates in the Windows Store
• Run Windows Update again
• Run Disk Cleanup
• Uninstall Antivirus software
• Delete all Temp files
• Run "Prefetch" in the command bar and select all, then delete all
• Restart the computer
• Run the Windows 8.1 Update again.

Once you do all of these and then run Windows 8.1 update, your screen will come to a point where you can see the User ID and the wheel spinning. I thought that the update got stuck but is was still running. This can take a little while (est. 1-3 hrs.) to complete, so be patient and once it's done, you'll have Windows 8.1 on your computer in no time."

Good bless this guy. It solved my problem. I follow the steps and Windows 8.1 installed without any problems. FYI I have an ASUS Zenbook UX31LA. Now I only have to deal with the noisy fan, it's driving me bananas!!! (if someone knows how to fix it, please let me know).

Try blowing out the inside of your laptop with compressed air to clean your fan and vents. you fan most likely has a buildup of dust on the blade causing it to be unbalanced and have to work harder to spin , equaling a higher noise operation. If that fails, your fan is most likely old and reaching end of life/is faulty, and I would replace it.

I am having an error message every i tried to update Window 8.1

Error Message - 0xc1900101 - 0x20030018

Kindly assist with this error.

I have exactly the same error messages.  Have uninstalled all third party autostart software, uninstalled hidden devices, run 'update driver' on every device in device manager, uninstalled antivirus software, removed all non essential hardware, ran all windows app and software updates 3x,  etc..

Rerun store 8.1 upgrade about 12 times in between all these changes. I would think that if the upgrade installation is coded in such a way to create these error codes, there would also be a way to find out what caused them to be 'tripped'.  Is there something in logs somewhere that will tell me?

I'm not a computer or software tech, so can't say for sure what the answer for you would be. Taking off Avast temporarily worked for me. I'm just thinking maybe other virus protection programs could be part of the problem in general. Don't know what program you have, but I would suggest uninstalling - or at lest disabling -  your virus protection program long enough to install 8.1. I activated Windows Defender during this process. Hopefully somebody at Microsoft is monitoring this forum so they can correct this flaw in the next version. It certainly was a MAJOR pain in the rear for me. Good luck.

Thanks but most of us here have all disabled our anti virus.  I use Defender (An MS Product!) and disabled it prior to attempt 8 or 9.  This is beyond ridiculous.  I have the 0xC1900101-0x20017 issue.  Pretty much just giving up.  MS has as well.
