"Couldn't update to Windows 8.1 - 0xC1900101 - 0x40017"

I have downloaded the Windows 8.1 update from the store but cannot get it to install. Each time I try, I get to the point where it is "getting my devices ready", then the PC restarts to a blue screen with error message. It then tries to recover the installation, fails, then restores Windows 8. When the system boots up after this, I get a message saying:

"Couldn't update to Windows 8.1

Sorry, we couldn't complete the update to Windows 8.1. We've restored your previous version of Windows to this PC.

0xC1900101 - 0x40017"

There is n o explanation as to why the update could be completed. Any ideas how to resolve this?

    After following this advice windows 8.1 booted and failed with bug report "NDIS Driver bug". Further research showed this to be connected to the Edimax WI-FI USB dongle. After removing this and re-booting Hay presto a successful installation. Thanks V much.

    With all due respect, I'm scrolling through 79 pages of people just like me, all with different hardware, experiencing the same problem.  GM does a recall when they issue a bad product.  Can't you guys hook up a fix?  Spend a little, you guys have about 150 billion in cash.

    I've pretty much given up. Over 100,000 views with similar problems and MS does not ever listen or care. I'll stay with win8 and forget win8.1. Not worth the frustration.

    I tried many different "solutions" and I was getting very very frustrated until I found this post:

    "I ended up calling Microsoft and they were able to guide me through some steps and we were able to fix the issue with the update. I wanted to post these steps in case anyone else is having the same problem.

    • Run sfc /scannow
    • Check for Windows Updates
    • Open Device Manager and update the Network Driver
    • Run all updates in the Windows Store
    • Run Windows Update again
    • Run Disk Cleanup
    • Uninstall Antivirus software
    • Delete all Temp files
    • Run "Prefetch" in the command bar and select all, then delete all
    • Restart the computer
    • Run the Windows 8.1 Update again.

    Once you do all of these and then run Windows 8.1 update, your screen will come to a point where you can see the User ID and the wheel spinning. I thought that the update got stuck but is was still running. This can take a little while (est. 1-3 hrs.) to complete, so be patient and once it's done, you'll have Windows 8.1 on your computer in no time."

    Good bless this guy. It solved my problem. I follow the steps and Windows 8.1 installed without any problems. FYI I have an ASUS Zenbook UX31LA. Now I only have to deal with the noisy fan, it's driving me bananas!!! (if someone knows how to fix it, please let me know).
