"Couldn't update to Windows 8.1 - 0xC1900101 - 0x40017"

I have downloaded the Windows 8.1 update from the store but cannot get it to install. Each time I try, I get to the point where it is "getting my devices ready", then the PC restarts to a blue screen with error message. It then tries to recover the installation, fails, then restores Windows 8. When the system boots up after this, I get a message saying:

"Couldn't update to Windows 8.1

Sorry, we couldn't complete the update to Windows 8.1. We've restored your previous version of Windows to this PC.

0xC1900101 - 0x40017"

There is n o explanation as to why the update could be completed. Any ideas how to resolve this?

    I'm not using any virus protection. This is on a clean SSD that I just bought that I wanted to load Windows 10 onto. 

    I am starting to suspect that the ASUS Motherboard isn't compatible.

    Hi,

    I purchased widows 8 a while back and everything has been horrible. I know my pc was a little old but before I purchased the software i downloaded the upgrade assistant and followed the instructions given. I contacted support so many times with issues, i even purchased a subscription from iyogi, anti virus software, everything. But my computer still crashed, so finally i sent it to a local computer technician. Which he informed me that my desktop cannot run windows 8. Now, i know microsoft technicians helped me reinstall this software several times and say good-bye. It worked a little while but when i tried to send emails same problem. So, my warranty on the software is expired. So I contact them again to ask for help with reinstalling, the technician finally told me i couldnt use it because of my monitor. Out of all the previous times i had them help me, no one said anything about that. So now i have purchased windows 8 and i cant use it now my windows 7 is screwed up. What must I do.

    It seems like you are floundering.  You are having way too much trouble. Not sure why you thought iyogi would help. I say this with all sincerity and as a fan of Windows 8.1 - save your data and do a CLEAN install of whatever version of Windows 7 worked on your machine before. Your local PC technician should have recognized your situation and helped you do this. Wait until sometime next year and maybe try Windows 10. If you need to upgrade sooner, there are many well-built and inexpensive PC (desktop or laptop) options on the market right now, with Windows 8.1 built in. Or maybe try a closed system like the Mac where one company provides both hardware and software.

    anyone else tried Win 10 Preview, have you gone through without having a problem, I'm talking about the people who's got 0x40017 error when upgrading to 8.1 (and no, we don't have Avast whatsoever).
