I'm not a computer or software tech, so can't say for sure what the answer for you would be. Taking off Avast temporarily worked for me. I'm just thinking maybe other virus protection programs could be part of the problem in general. Don't know what program you have, but I would suggest uninstalling - or at lest disabling - your virus protection program long enough to install 8.1. I activated Windows Defender during this process. Hopefully somebody at Microsoft is monitoring this forum so they can correct this flaw in the next version. It certainly was a MAJOR pain in the rear for me. Good luck.
"Couldn't update to Windows 8.1 - 0xC1900101 - 0x40017"
I have downloaded the Windows 8.1 update from the store but cannot get it to install. Each time I try, I get to the point where it is "getting my devices ready", then the PC restarts to a blue screen with error message. It then tries to recover the installation, fails, then restores Windows 8. When the system boots up after this, I get a message saying:
"Couldn't update to Windows 8.1
Sorry, we couldn't complete the update to Windows 8.1. We've restored your previous version of Windows to this PC.
0xC1900101 - 0x40017"
There is n o explanation as to why the update could be completed. Any ideas how to resolve this?

2014-10-03T04:53:42+00:00 I have downloaded the Windows 10 Technical Preview in hopes that I can update my ASUS U43F running Windows 8.
It unfortunately is showing the same error. Blue Screen saying DRIVER_VIOLATION....
I guess theres no hope in upgrading past Windows 8

2014-10-03T22:24:18+00:00 You don't say what virus protection program you're using. I am not a technician so all I can attest to is the temporary removal of Avast to install 8.1. That worked for me, but I can't offer any other remedy. Good luck.

2014-10-03T23:46:42+00:00 I have Norton Security Suite, and have not seen it listed at a problem. As I noted earlier, the major annoyance of this issue is the MS msg saying the upgrade failed, but does not list reason[s].
Ergo: After many tries, I give up. Will simply stay with 8.0. Not worth all this frustration.

2014-10-04T13:53:17+00:00 Don't know how many of the threads you've seen, so I'll just repeat my experience. Maybe it will help others. I don't remember the person who posted it so I can't take credit, but I was getting these same messages. For me, it turned out that my Avast virus protection program was preventing the install. I temporarily uninstalled Avast (and activated Windows Defender just in case). With Avast uninstalled I was able to go through the upgrade to 8.1 successfully, then reinstalled my Avast. One previous reply to this said they had Norton - which I also had in the beginning - and 8.1 installed without any problem with Norton, so I'm not sure what the other issue might be there. Good luck.
