"Couldn't update to Windows 8.1 - 0xC1900101 - 0x40017"

I have downloaded the Windows 8.1 update from the store but cannot get it to install. Each time I try, I get to the point where it is "getting my devices ready", then the PC restarts to a blue screen with error message. It then tries to recover the installation, fails, then restores Windows 8. When the system boots up after this, I get a message saying:

"Couldn't update to Windows 8.1

Sorry, we couldn't complete the update to Windows 8.1. We've restored your previous version of Windows to this PC.

0xC1900101 - 0x40017"

There is n o explanation as to why the update could be completed. Any ideas how to resolve this?

Having the same problem here with my Dell XPS 15 laptop but managed to get it to install after updating some drivers. I went to the support pages on Dell's website and installed an updated display driver for the integrated Intel graphics card. I also updated the NVidia drivers (version 327.23) directly from NVidia's website - oddly, the one Dell has on their site is older than what came with my laptop. Can't say which of these drivers is the culprit but after updating them, the upgrade to 8.1 completed successfully. So anyone with a Dell XPS 15 laptop - just update your drivers!

I uninstalled the Steelseries Engine 2 software and the install went through for me. So Steelseries users uninstall, reboot, start 8.1 install and you should have some luck. I did not have to uninstall Nvidia drivers, but that may not hurt and I see some people are having success with that.

The Steelseries website is reporting that it is not compatible with Windows 8.1 on the driver downloads page:

    SteelSeries Engine for Windows

OS: Win XP, Win Vista, Win 7, Win 8 (ALERT: not compatible with Win 8.1) (32/64 bit bit).

Region: INT. Version: 2.8.0059_01. Released: 2013-10-17

I guess I'll wait for either Microsoft to sort things out with the installer and/or Steelseries to provide a compatible device driver.

I'm also using Razer products for my computer, and also receiving errors during the Device Setup. However, I tried it with both uninstalled drivers for Razer, and installed drivers for Razer, and even unplugged them during; I still get the device error and it still does not install. So I'm pretty much assuming it has nothing to do with the Razer products.

My setup is listed below. Compliments of program Speccy.

    Operating System

     Windows 8 Pro 64-bit

    CPU

     Intel Core i5 3570K @ 3.40GHz

     Ivy Bridge 22nm Technology

    RAM

     32.0GB Dual-Channel DDR3 @ 686MHz (11-11-11-30)

    Motherboard

     ASUSTeK COMPUTER INC. P8Z77-V PRO/THUNDERBOLT (LGA1155)

    Graphics

     LG TV (1920x1080@60Hz)

2048MB NVIDIA GeForce GTX 680 (EVGA)

2048MB NVIDIA GeForce GTX 680 (EVGA)

     ForceWare version: 327.23

SLI Disabled -- Disabled SLI incase it adds more issues to the already problematic sequence.

    Hard Drives

238GB Samsung SSD 840 PRO Series (SSD)

238GB Samsung SSD 840 PRO Series (SSD)

    Optical Drives

     ASUS DRW-24B1ST c

    Audio

     NVIDIA High Definition Audio

I'm experiencing failure of the update between 86% - 93% of "Device Setup", the error I receive is 0x101 - 0x30018 when it resets me back to Win 8.

Ironically I could install Win 8.1 Preview with zero issues. However 8.1 RTM is giving me the device failure.

I've updated my BIOS, chipset, MB, audio drivers, video drivers, USB drivers, many different things, I still encounter this error. I've unplugged anything that is not associated with the computer running i.e. headset, APC battery backup monitor, USB plugs besides keyboard/mouse.

Aside from updates, I have run a RAM test, CPU, GPU stress tests, checked my discs, cd rom drive; nothing is broken inside this PC, and the drivers are updating as I find updates, I still continue to receive the errors. I've also tried to view the event viewer but I can never quite find anything that happens at the exact time that the error occurs.

Waiting for some good news of a fix...

I agree, after trial and error the update doesn't appear to bomb because of the Razer products/software.
