I have downloaded the Windows 8.1 update from the store but cannot get it to install. Each time I try, I get to the point where it is "getting my devices ready", then the PC restarts to a blue screen with error message. It then tries to recover the installation, fails, then restores Windows 8. When the system boots up after this, I get a message saying:
"Couldn't update to Windows 8.1
Sorry, we couldn't complete the update to Windows 8.1. We've restored your previous version of Windows to this PC.
0xC1900101 - 0x40017"
There is n o explanation as to why the update could be completed. Any ideas how to resolve this?

O oh, I think this was the problem to me. I have a logitech mouse.
What does that mean? Are there compatibility issues with Logitech too? Did you uninstall any Logitech software and turn any hardware off? And did that allow you to update?
Lots of questions sorry, but still this is a bit ridiculous. Does 8.1 work with anything? LOL
any news on solving 0x40017? amd's latest beta driver 14.6 doens't support 8 any more, so things are gradually moving forward and leaving Windows 8 behind yet microsoft still hasn't provided any solutions to this error.
Same error problem on a friend's Acer E1-571 Aspire i3 3110M @ 2.4GHz, 4GB SD-RAM and HD Graphics 4000 whilst attempting to upgrade via the Store to Windows 8.1 from 8.0. Had ensured that all Windows Updates were installed prior to upgrade attempt. This is now end of May 2014 and I am appalled that Microsoft still haven't sorted this mess out. A total waste of nearly 4 hours!

Interesting, now they have a direct link to 8.1? have you tried this download? same result as end up with 0x40017? just checking, its for 8.1 not 8.1 update 1, right? I might give it try or not, I want to get proper update as I paid for this ****, on the other hand, why waste another 20 mins as I've wasted so much before :(
I tried updating both via the MS store and the manual method via the link I provided in my previous post. Still get the same error near the end of the process when it says "configuring your PC". Gets to about 75% on that step and gets into a reboot cycle. I tried removing Start8 in addition to anything related to NVidia (based on other reports I read of this causing conflicts). Still the error persists. I read a few other things indicating that various pieces of pre-installed ASUS software could also cause problems. I'm at the point where I've spent enough time on this and I'm not going to go through my installed programs one by one and try to figure out which one is causing problems. I just assume wipe the PC completely and re-install Win8.1 instead. Though that is proving to be a bit more challenging than I anticipated with having an OEM license. More fun.
Just wanted to provide an update on this that I was successful in updating to Win 8.1. But it required me to completely wipe out my original Win 8.0 installation and start with a fresh 8.0 install. I waited to install anything aside from various device drivers. Then ran all applicable Windows critical updates. Went to the MS Store and updated to 8.1 from there. Talk about a hassle but at least I have it now and I suppose a clean install isn't necessarily a bad thing. Just tedious to go through and re-install all my programs.
