After following this thread for months, I finally got 8.1 to install on my Dell Alienware Aurora R4. The following things seem to have each been at least partially responsible for the error in my case. I had to deactivate and then manually remove the drivers from an old copy of Kaspersky Small Office Security. I had uninstalled it long ago, but Kaspersky software is infamous for leaving **** on your system after an uninstall. The drivers (klim6.sys especially) remained in effect. I'm confident that this was primarily to blame in my case. Various software had to be removed. I had to uninstall an old screen capture utility called Snagit. It was an old version that is no longer supported. Also uninstalled iTunes and all the related Apple crapware. There were also several Alienware-specific utilities (Command Center, Respawn) that either had updates, or had to be removed. I used the Dell system analyzer tool to identify some other drivers that needed updating. I also made sure I was running the very latest Nvidia drivers. Somehow, the combination of all the above resulted in 8.1 being applied without error and is now running fine. Hopefully this will prove beneficial to someone out there. Cheers, -=N80=-
