"Couldn't update to Windows 8.1 - 0xC1900101 - 0x40017"

I have downloaded the Windows 8.1 update from the store but cannot get it to install. Each time I try, I get to the point where it is "getting my devices ready", then the PC restarts to a blue screen with error message. It then tries to recover the installation, fails, then restores Windows 8. When the system boots up after this, I get a message saying:

"Couldn't update to Windows 8.1

Sorry, we couldn't complete the update to Windows 8.1. We've restored your previous version of Windows to this PC.

0xC1900101 - 0x40017"

There is n o explanation as to why the update could be completed. Any ideas how to resolve this?

    I have just managed to upgrade to 8.1, last attempt was October 13.

    Thank you Microsoft but it would have been nice for yourselves to have acknowledged the problem and there was a most definite problem.

    One thing, would it be possible to have the 'progress bar' replaced in the next 'upgrade', nothing worse than waiting for something to happen and nothing does except the rather wry comments you have chosen to display.

    No activity here since Feb 18th. Does this mean that the issue have been solved now and that the update is working now? :-)

    Nahh, just tried to upgrade again and it failed.

    I still can't figure out why and neither have I found the log that might tell me. Has anyone had any luck locating the log that shows which device is making the upgrade fail?

    I'm running the latest version of the NVidia driver and everything is also updated to latest driver as far as I know.

    Maybe the Update 1 For Windows 8.1 that is coming soon will help? Anyone heard anything about this?

    66 page long thread and still no solution. Only choice is to not upgrade or move to Apple.
