"Couldn't update to Windows 8.1 - 0xC1900101 - 0x40017"

I have downloaded the Windows 8.1 update from the store but cannot get it to install. Each time I try, I get to the point where it is "getting my devices ready", then the PC restarts to a blue screen with error message. It then tries to recover the installation, fails, then restores Windows 8. When the system boots up after this, I get a message saying:

"Couldn't update to Windows 8.1

Sorry, we couldn't complete the update to Windows 8.1. We've restored your previous version of Windows to this PC.

0xC1900101 - 0x40017"

There is n o explanation as to why the update could be completed. Any ideas how to resolve this?

Finally I found the solution (for my HP Pavilion m4-1004tx):

    1. Using "Reset your PC" on your Windows 8 (you may need the DVD installation or USB having Windows 8 installation) to re-install your Windows and clean up everything. Remember to backup your data first.
    2. When it done, go to windows update and turn it off, do not update anything.
    3. Go to:

    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2871389/

    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2917499/

    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2885699/

    Download and update these manually.

    1. Restart the PC, go to Store and Upgrade your Windows.

    Hope this help! ^^

I am also one of the lucky ones who cannot upgrade to Windows 8.1

For me the error code is "0x1900101 - 0x20017" on an Asus F3JV laptop.

I have already tried doing completely fresh installs of Win 8, with latest drivers and updates. Also tried "reset your PC", etc.

"do not update anything from Windows Update"

After fresh installs, do not setup anything (drivers, programs,...) go to

    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2871389/

    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2917499/

    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2885699/

download and setup these to get the Windows 8.1 Upgrade from Store. (just 3 updates, no more)

    then try once upgrade.

as this thread is still growing, does anyone have the luck to go through 8.1 upgrade without having 0x40017 and without having to do the refresh, after many failures I do not dare to try again to waste my time.
