"Couldn't update to Windows 8.1 - 0xC1900101 - 0x40017"

I have downloaded the Windows 8.1 update from the store but cannot get it to install. Each time I try, I get to the point where it is "getting my devices ready", then the PC restarts to a blue screen with error message. It then tries to recover the installation, fails, then restores Windows 8. When the system boots up after this, I get a message saying:

"Couldn't update to Windows 8.1

Sorry, we couldn't complete the update to Windows 8.1. We've restored your previous version of Windows to this PC.

0xC1900101 - 0x40017"

There is n o explanation as to why the update could be completed. Any ideas how to resolve this?

    I updated ssd's firmware from 1.08 to 1.27b

    then i secure erased, Using MB's  Bios SSD secure erase.

    Then removed the sdd's And My (storage drive)

    Then i updated BIos.

    Then i turned pc off,

      Plugged in ssds in intel 6gig port 0.and 1 port

    enabled raid, in bios, Set up raid on SDD's only............. IE, did not connect any other drives.

    Install windows 8 on the raid drive.

    Now working with IST and winodws 8.1

    Many many hours, and alot of stress,  Its working now. learn t a lot tho.

    OK, thanks for the explanation. You did a clean install of Win 8 by the sound of it and that so far seems to be the only consistentlly effective solution for this debacle. I was really hoping I did not have to do that as I have a lot of apps and a generally complex environment that I really do not want to have to rebuild. I am going to stay with Win 8 for now (which works great for me BTW) until I hear of an easy fix for this issue. Cheers.

    Not even clean installations will guarantee the update process will work.  We're getting the problem on a Windows 8 VM which was installed a couple of months ago but, other than updates, has had absolutely nothing else installed on it since - so that should be close enough to a clean installation.

    It also makes Microsoft's explanation of a driver incompatibility check a bit nonsensical - the hypervisor for the VM on this machine is Microsoft Hyper-V, so every single device driver on the Windows 8 VM is a 100% genuine Microsoft driver (not even Microsoft certified - they're all Microsoft).

    So, install Windows 8 into a Microsoft VM running on a Microsoft operating system, with Microsoft drivers and fully up-to-date with Microsoft updates, and not a single piece of non-Microsoft software on the machine, and it still won't update to Windows 8.1.

    Yeah, good one, guys ...

    Hi I am using hp envy touchsmart 14. I tried every single one of your suggestions but nothing worked. I do not have any external devices connected. I am using norton internet security pre installed by the seller

    I would send back too shop if you can, Because mS , dont give detail on this error. Its very hard to say what it is, Have you got raid on your touch pad ?

    Becouse my ssd's work fine in single drive but in raid would not work nice. All my nethew did was change y motherboard, then my problem apeaerd .

    Im lucky one of those on the list help me.
