"Couldn't update to Windows 8.1 - 0xC1900101 - 0x40017"

I have downloaded the Windows 8.1 update from the store but cannot get it to install. Each time I try, I get to the point where it is "getting my devices ready", then the PC restarts to a blue screen with error message. It then tries to recover the installation, fails, then restores Windows 8. When the system boots up after this, I get a message saying:

"Couldn't update to Windows 8.1

Sorry, we couldn't complete the update to Windows 8.1. We've restored your previous version of Windows to this PC.

0xC1900101 - 0x40017"

There is n o explanation as to why the update could be completed. Any ideas how to resolve this?

    My writing skills poor. Did not intend to snark or offend. Not commenting on your skills or knowledge. Just observing that people seem to succeed after a few tries or end up in the morass. Microsoft response here nonexistent. I'd say pathetic, but that would require some attempt on their part. I personally HAVE moved to Mac for laptop, still use Surface and Windows phone. Mac move not without issues or expense, including paying again for Mac versions of apps. I actually prefer Win 8.1 with Office on Surface to Mac Office, so will be installing Win 8 on Mac, but may not try 8.1 as I'm pretty sure I'll get zero support. You are right about the issue being out there all over the place. At least 3 similar threads here. If Microsoft cared, they'd have responded to someone somewhere. All I've seen is that VP in charge of this recently left "to pursue other interests", but that helps all us struggling with this how exactly?

    every one in gaming community is going steam OS , people moving to linux OP windows 9 will die very hard. We will see end of this year.Things change. no one has xbox one, all ps4 ms will be very small company in 2 years time...

    If ms could have gave me an error code from start, w8 would have been less of a pain. Got new computer just because of the software dont even wont to turn it on an play a game.

    Never had this with XP Xp 64 vista, w7

    You get support if you pay by ringing . im happy my problem is sorted. But been really stressful tho.

    Error codes means nothing under windows 8.

    mine fixed my updating bios, flashing sdds and secure erase hard disks...

    Thanks to OCZ forum.    Hope this could help with this error, would be nice if mS software could have said, A Hard disk problem .

    That sounds encouraging. Can you be a little more specific please; Is your SSD your primary drive containing your OS? Did you update your SSD Firmware and do a Secure Erase of your SSD and a clean install of Win 8.1 or did you just do the Firmware update and then the upgrade from Win 8 to WIn 8.1 went through OK? If the latter, where did the secure erase come in? Many thanks.
