"Couldn't update to Windows 8.1 - 0xC1900101 - 0x40017"

I have downloaded the Windows 8.1 update from the store but cannot get it to install. Each time I try, I get to the point where it is "getting my devices ready", then the PC restarts to a blue screen with error message. It then tries to recover the installation, fails, then restores Windows 8. When the system boots up after this, I get a message saying:

"Couldn't update to Windows 8.1

Sorry, we couldn't complete the update to Windows 8.1. We've restored your previous version of Windows to this PC.

0xC1900101 - 0x40017"

There is n o explanation as to why the update could be completed. Any ideas how to resolve this?

    Having a similar issue.  Tried to install 8.1 three times so far, still getting the same 0xC1900101-0x40017 error.  Was running the latest beta video drivers from NVidia (331.40).  Just tried to uninstall them and upgrade and see if it works now.

    Already tried:

    Removing AVG Anti-Virus

    Re-enabling Windows Defender

    Removing all external devices (Logitech WebCam, iPhone dock, Logitech Gamepad, USB 3.0 HDD Dock, Thumb Drives, etc)

    Cleaning up the registry by removing broken stuff

    Hardware:

    ASUS Sabertooth X79 Motherboard

    Intel 3930k CPU

    64GB of Memory

    2 Samsung 830 SSDs in a RAID-0 on the Intel Chipset

    10 Seagate 3TB Drives in a RAID-6 on a LSI Raid Controller

    1 Seagate 3TB Drive (non-RAIDED) on the Intel Chipset

    NVidia 580 Video card

    Two Monitors - ASUS something 2560x1600, and Dell 2405FPW 1920x1200

    Corsair iH80 CPU Cooler (Didn't install this myself, I believe it has a USB connection, but haven't disabled it yet)

    You know what ?  I am a faithful Microsoft user, I was a Microsoft Partner for many years; but this should simply NOT be that way.

    If the update is not ready, simply don't release it, some of us need our PC/tablet for work... a lot of time wasted on this... again, you will lose credibility...

    Let me know when a real working upgrade is available...

    Had the same issue trying to install 8.1 and realized the problem was SteelSeries Engine.

    Similar issue on a Dell E520 (Pentium D 2.8Ghz) with PCI SATA controller (Standard SATA AHCI Controller) and SSD drive as well as a couple of SATA conventional drives. Also HP 930C printer and Ralink based 802.11n USB WiFi.

    I just got this same thing last night.  I haven't done too much to troubleshoot it yet, but I plan to try some basic stuff tonight.  It sounds like that's not going to cut it though, so hopefully there'll be a Microsoft endorsed fix soon.

    WD Red 1TB (HDD internal data only drive)

    Peripherals:

    WD My Book 2TB (external HDD backup location USB connected)

    Keyboard/Mouse

    3.5mm connected speakers

    USB connected web cam

    Monitor USB Hub

    Chassis USB 3.0 passthrough connector

    Built in July 2013.
