"Couldn't update to Windows 8.1 - 0xC1900101 - 0x40017"

I have downloaded the Windows 8.1 update from the store but cannot get it to install. Each time I try, I get to the point where it is "getting my devices ready", then the PC restarts to a blue screen with error message. It then tries to recover the installation, fails, then restores Windows 8. When the system boots up after this, I get a message saying:

"Couldn't update to Windows 8.1

Sorry, we couldn't complete the update to Windows 8.1. We've restored your previous version of Windows to this PC.

0xC1900101 - 0x40017"

There is n o explanation as to why the update could be completed. Any ideas how to resolve this?

    Try uninstalling NVIDIA drivers and DO NOT reboot, install 8.1 after nvidia driver uninstall. This has worked for some people

    The Key to this is not to reboot. If you uninstall the graphics card and reboot the system windows will re-install the drivers automatically.

    Steps

    1. Uninstall the card : Control Panel/ System / Device Manager / Video right click the video card Uninstall
    2. Go to the windows store and run the update.

    Same here, donwloaded the update then a blue screen on the reboot message saying 'a device required is not available', it doesnt mention which device/driver.  

    All drivers up to date, ran a chkdsk and sfc, tried the installation 4 times now.  Im running a Macbook Air with Intel HD4000 graphics, maybe its a problem with a driver somewhere, I dont know but I was quite liking Windows 8, infact I have stopped using OSX, but this issue is reminding me that things just work with OSX, Windows can be such a pain to say the least!

    Come on, any ideas Microsoft?

    Same for me. Downloaded the update via Windows Store, installed and rebooted to a black screen.

    Powered off and on:

    "Couldn't update to Windows 8.1

    Sorry, we couldn't complete the update to Windows 8.1. We've restored your previous version of Windows to this PC.

    0xC1900101 - 0x40017"

    Thanks to everyone for the suggestion re: Nvidia uninstallation and I'm glad it's working for some of you. Unfortunately, having uninstalled the drivers and immediately run the Win 8.1 update from the store, I am still having the same problem as before. So, back to the drawing board for me :(

    Your Welcome Martin. It could be another 3rd part driver as well. Next step I might take is uninstalling any extra third party device driver from the device manager (printer, Fancy mouse, camera etc.) and try it again.

    OR

    wait till Microsoft finds what the issue is.

    I think its not limited to video card drivers but the odd third party driver it just doesn't like.
