"Couldn't update to Windows 8.1 - 0xC1900101 - 0x40017"

I have downloaded the Windows 8.1 update from the store but cannot get it to install. Each time I try, I get to the point where it is "getting my devices ready", then the PC restarts to a blue screen with error message. It then tries to recover the installation, fails, then restores Windows 8. When the system boots up after this, I get a message saying:

"Couldn't update to Windows 8.1

Sorry, we couldn't complete the update to Windows 8.1. We've restored your previous version of Windows to this PC.

0xC1900101 - 0x40017"

There is n o explanation as to why the update could be completed. Any ideas how to resolve this?

    I have a major problem. II downloaded the windows 8.1 and when it was almost completed an message flashed up  .. Your PC has ran into a problem and needs to restart. we collecting some error information and then we will restart fpr you.re looking into the errors. The windows symbol alternates with this message

    That was 24 hours ago and that message is continuously flashing. I cant get beyond it, switching off the computer does not alter it as soon as its switched on that message is there and I have not been able to use my computer.

    Thanks. I followed the steps for a clean boot, but, unfortunately the install failed at about 86%. The error message after Windows 8 was restored was: Error 0xC1900101 - 0x30018.

    I managed to solve my problem, and successfully installed Windows 8.1 PRO.

    Seems Windows 8.1 PRO didn't like that I had 1 pair of 2gb RAM memory sticks and 1 pair of 1gbs memory sticks. I removed all RAM sticks but one of the 2gb memory sticks and voila everything went smooth.
