"Couldn't update to Windows 8.1 - 0xC1900101 - 0x40017"

<<I really appologize for the delay in responding to this thread. This issue is caused by a driver bug check during second boot while installing Windows 8.1. I request you to check if all the updates are installed on the computer via Windows Update before you start with the Windows 8.1 installation. It would be great if you can provide more information regarding this issue:

 

1)       What is the make and model of the computer?

2)       Do you have any external devices (except the mouse and the keyboard) connected to the computer?

3)       Are you using any third party security program installed on the computer?>>

Since Microsoft still hasn't found a fix for this, here's my system info:

1. HP Envy, AMD FX-6200 Six-Core Processor 3.80 GHz, 10.0GB RAM, running 64-bit Windows 8.
2. I tried disconnecting everything except mouse and keyboard. I tried disabling the Ralink Bluetooth Adapter and Ralink Wi-Fi Adapter.
3. I disabled AVG prior to running in the install.

The install still does not run, gives me the blue screen system_thread_exception_not_handled and 0xc1900101-0x30018 errors. All of my drivers are up to date. I have all Windows 8 updates installed. 

I REFUSE to go as far as some have gone to run this install. I WILL NOT uninstall any software, drivers, or go so far as to remove a chip from my system, just to get this infernal update. 

MICROSOFT NEEDS TO PUT OUT A STABLE RELEASE THAT WILL INSTALL FOR EVERYONE!

I work for a tech company and if we were to release product updates like this that didn't work, we would be out of business. It's sad that Microsoft is so confident that there aren't viable options to Windows that they feel they can release junk software.

I get the "couldn't update to Windows 8.1" error as well and Windows restores the previous version of the operating system.  I installed all the updates and even ran the update assistant from the Microsoft web site and installed and updated everything it recommended.

The error I get is basically the same except the last part of the code:

   0xC1900101-0x30018

I've tried most of the things suggested in this thread, but don't have the time to keep guessing at what I should try next and retrying the upgrade.

Microsoft needs to provide a patch so that ANYONE can install this upgrade without having to jump through hoops and spend hours of our precious (and limited) spare time!  I'm pissed and frustrated!  Microsoft should be ashamed to release 8.1 prematurely with all of these problems.

EDIT:  I plan to try again in a month or so after I've downloaded and installed more patches.  I'll check back here later and let people know if I've been able to get it to work.  For now, I'm going to let Microsoft get their act together and fix the problem.

For the record, I have the following:

HP 700 Envy

3.7 GHz AMD Elite Quad-Core A10-6700 Accelerated Processor

AMD Radeon HD 86700 Graphics

12 GB DDR3 Memory

2TB HDD

I have all the latest Windows Updates installed.

Other than an HP Deskjet F-380 Printer, there are no other external devices attached.  I have Norton installed (out of the box), but I disabled it for the installation of Windows 8.1.

I've wasted many hours now spanned across several days. I've uninstalled drivers then attempted the install, disabled adapters, plugged USB, ran updates, etc. and still the same issue. My PC attempts the upgrade and reboots about twice, I see the flash of a blue screen really quick at some point, then it reverts back to Windows 8 and gives that 0xC1900101 - 0x40017 error.

This is on an Asus G75VW w/ nvidia GTX 660M and I'm on a domain.

Well, same issue here. I have an Asus S56C Ultrabook. Getting the exact same error. I found my laptop had 15 updates... Hoping it will work on try number two...

Well I finally gave up and wiped my hard drive  and reinstalled win 8 then the  updates , then loaded win 8.1 all installed ok.  so dam frustrating to have to do this.

I did not  change my hardware configuration  just did a wipe and a clean install I did not load any apps or programs  just the windows updates so it looks like drivers or software, well for me anyway.
