"Couldn't update to Windows 8.1 - 0xC1900101 - 0x40017"

I have downloaded the Windows 8.1 update from the store but cannot get it to install. Each time I try, I get to the point where it is "getting my devices ready", then the PC restarts to a blue screen with error message. It then tries to recover the installation, fails, then restores Windows 8. When the system boots up after this, I get a message saying:

"Couldn't update to Windows 8.1

Sorry, we couldn't complete the update to Windows 8.1. We've restored your previous version of Windows to this PC.

0xC1900101 - 0x40017"

There is n o explanation as to why the update could be completed. Any ideas how to resolve this?

    I am also having the 0xC1900101-0x40017 problem trying to install Windows 8.1.  I had contacted Microsoft Tech Support who took control of my PC. They disabled my 680-GTX graphics card, all or most active services, took out my Win 8 Start button, and I'm not sure what else, but error results were the same after attempting to reinstall.  Though I was able to restore Win 8, it was a mess and took me the next day to get it back in order (I had lost my USB3 ports, Homegroup, LAN, and some other processes).

    I then went to Asus and updated my BIOS and drivers, not realizing they were now out of date. Again I tried to reinstall Win 8.1 but to no avail. This time I captured a copy (with my camera) of the split second blue screen saying your PC ran into a problem.  This occurs near the end of the attempted install.  It ends saying your error is "IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL".  Probably a divide by zero fault(?).

    I also have built my own PC based on an Asus P9X70 Deluxe MB and a 3960X CPU.  I may try to contact MS support again, but I don't have high hopes.  This is very frustrating.

    By the way, it was no picnic when I updated to Win 8 Pro from Win 7, it took me several days.  It was finally accomplished from a clean install off a separately purchased MS DVD of Win 8.  Perhaps this is the only way to install Win 8.1.  The thought of a clean install is painful and I don't think it is worth it.

    Where's Microsoft in all this?

    Yeah it's at the very least not some random wifi card since I have the same update problem but no wifi.

    I don't need 8.1 for now since there aren't any dx11.2 games yet, but I sure hope this will be fixed until then...

    It's not the machines it's the software what is broke, don't look for what's not there. Microsoft need to sort this out.

    after month !!! still the same problem.

    I have bought new HP ENVY 17-j009ed i7-4702MQ 16 GB RAM

    and i have bought upgrade Windows 8.0 to 8.1 PRO

    and i unable to update my PC to Windows 8.1, it keeps rolling back the update attempt with error 0xC1900101 - 0x40017

    1. I unplugged all external devices and update all drivers.
    2. I have checked as many drivers as possible and as far as I can check they are all up to date and working correctly.
    3. I reset wsreset.exe

    It's very frustrating...
