"Couldn't update to Windows 8.1 - 0xC1900101 - 0x40017"

As an Ironic FYI - the update doesn't work on the Microsoft Surface either :-)

So much for seamless OS and hardware "integration".

OK, what kind of worked for me:

-I updated Avast for the latest version of the software (I first thought it's would have been done automatically, but when I forced it manually, I was like 2 versions late! which kind of surprised me)

Then, I didn't have this error code again (0xC1900101 - 0x40017)

I have downloaded the Windows 8.1 update from the store but cannot get it to install. Each time I try, I get to the point where it is "getting my devices ready", then the PC restarts to a blue screen with error message. It then tries to recover the installation, fails, then restores Windows 8. When the system boots up after this, I get a message saying:

 

"Couldn't update to Windows 8.1

 

Sorry, we couldn't complete the update to Windows 8.1. We've restored your previous version of Windows to this PC.

 

0xC1900101 - 0x40017"

 

There is n o explanation as to why the update could be completed. Any ideas how to resolve this?

I just purchased a new Lenovo Lap top computer with Windows 8 and have tried to upgrade to

Windows 8.1 without success. I used to love Microsoft but, now I actually despise them. I wish google would come out with an OS that would over shadow Microsoft.  Here lately Microsoft brings nothing to the table.  Sorry, Microsoft, Windows 8 just plain old sucks.

Hi--thank you for the information--could I ask a question--I have windows 8 on my computer --I brought my computer with windows 8---so I'm confused??? why do I have to download windows 8.1 ??? when I did download windows 8.1 my computers went completely out and when I did finely get on the computer I had to download systems restore--and after 5 tries I finely got systems to bring back everything from November--so I just don't understand it---and I'm NEVER going to try it again---but again THANKS  (:>)

Windows 8 is shipped with all new computer builds. 8.1 is new, released just last month, and is not old enough to be shipped with builds yet. 8.1 also has some fundamental bugs, one of which is massive driver incompatibility. This causes many problems installing it, varying from failing to install to crashing your entire system. If you wish to experience 8.1, follow the advice in this thread to install it, updating your drivers ect and see if you can successfully install it. If you aren't particularly interested, give 8.1 some time to be worked on by Microsoft and try and install it at a relatively soon later date, as it being a free install will not last for long I am sure.
