"Couldn't update to Windows 8.1 - 0xC1900101 - 0x40017"

Well, after several failed attempts I decided to make a DVD with windows 8.1 iso and to do a fresh installation on my computer. Everything worked perfectly and I have 8.1 up and running on my PC. Although I was very reluctant on doing a fresh installation, I was actually "forced" to this solution since all the other PCs in my workspace have been updated to 8.1 with minor or no problems (see my earlier post) and I'm heavily relying on Skydrive, which works great on 8.1. So, instead of loosing more time on failed attempts I decided to follow the "secure" path of a fresh installation and at the end of the day, even if I had to re-install all my apps, I think this saved me more time. Its a shame that Microsoft has failed to provide a decent update to 8.1 and pushes loyal customers to this time and money-consuming process.

I agree I too am having this same issue.

It seems to me that most people encountering this issue (myself included) have Nvidia hardware, but obviously there are many other causes. Nearly all computer updates work around problems such as incompatible drivers, but with 8.1, a simple thing like a slightly old driver can bring the whole install down, now if it was a huge update I could understand, but its not.

I must have tried running the update 10 times with every possible cause that I could find on the internet. But non have worked. When you look at 8.1 its really just a fancy service pack with some new features, but is abit of a failure if you ask me.

Microsoft doesn't seem to be doing alot about it. It seems pretty stupid that over 2 months after launch, the last post on most of the forums is still someone saying how its not working for them, just like the hundreds of other people before them.

I wonder if Microsoft will ever bring out a fix (Windows 8.1.1)?

Oh well... Windows 8.2 here we come.

I finally resolved my issue by installing latest WIndows update (Tuesday's patch), thanks ;)

But still, 2 months for Microsoft to resolve this...keep that in mind.

nope, tried one more time after patched with the latest patch, still got stuck in the same last stage with the same error code 0x40017.

I really held some hope after seeing you resolved it after the latest patch, and I think Ms made a new installer because when I was trying it last night, it forced me to re-download it, so I thought it might get through this time, but no luck.

just been curious why Microsoft made it so hard to upgrade to 8.1 , I upgraded from windows 7 to 8 without any problem, all the hardware remains the same, no changes whatsoever since that, whats so special about 8.1 that it has to throw a error means nothing to the customer? does MS give up on fixing this or you are still trying??

its been almost 2 months since 8.1 officially released, its getting ridiculous.

I am finding this 8.1 update complete madness. I will probably go insane before it is installed.

 

I am one of the unlucky ones where the downloads stop at 50%. I have tried it many times. Each time it seems to stay on 50% a little longer, just teasing me!

 

I do not have time to apply all the solutions that have been forthcoming. I've tried many but none have worked. I have a sensible job that takes up a lot of my time.

 

I do not have the time to refresh Windows 8 as it removes all my programmes and dumps them in completely useless folder. My computer is part of my job and I do not wish to have to install all my programmes again.

 

My son's computer has 8.1 and it works really well. All I want to do is to click on a button and my computer will update to 8.1. Just like it says. Is that too much to ask?

 

Is there a sign of a comprehensive solution? Are Microsoft actually working on it? Please just give me a sign.

I have a similar problem with HD Radeon 3650 switchable graphics on Vista.  It loaded a generic driver when converting to 8.1.  I believe my laptop is an MSI under the LG label (LG R710).

I have repeatedly done back for an update and got no where.  The generic driver is serviceable but no where near what it was under Vista.  Attempts to download Catalyst results in an error and abhorts.

I too am anxious to see a resolution to this problem.
