"Couldn't update to Windows 8.1 - 0xC1900101 - 0x40017"

I have downloaded the Windows 8.1 update from the store but cannot get it to install. Each time I try, I get to the point where it is "getting my devices ready", then the PC restarts to a blue screen with error message. It then tries to recover the installation, fails, then restores Windows 8. When the system boots up after this, I get a message saying:

"Couldn't update to Windows 8.1

Sorry, we couldn't complete the update to Windows 8.1. We've restored your previous version of Windows to this PC.

0xC1900101 - 0x40017"

There is n o explanation as to why the update could be completed. Any ideas how to resolve this?

I just tried for the 20th time and it failed again.

Is Microsoft trying to fix this problem?

    Hi,

Even I am experiencing the same issue

unable to update my HP laptop

I read all the comments in this post and tried all the possibilities.

but nothing helped me in updating to 8.1

Should I wait for Microsoft to solve this issue?

I'm having this same issue with a new HP Laptop.  I've installed all updated and still receive the same error message.  I gave up after the 4th attempt.

I have contacted Microsoft technical support & a support engineer attempted to assist using screen sharing & remote access.

He checked the system & tried the various offered solutions.

Unfortunately the upgrade was again unsuccessful (what a surprise) however the installation did progress further.

I am waiting to hear back again from them for further assistance.

This is unbelieveable. I have never seen such a lack of communication on the part of Microsoft. This is BS!!! I haven't seen one email, article, etc from MS about this. I have been trying to update from 8 pro for 2 months and same error every time. Does MS just scan posts until one of US finds the soultion, then they make an update? This is ridiculous

Calling Bill Gates - Your Company Needs You!

Did it all, tried it all and failed once more!  Most recently tried the http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2871389 .

Always hangs on second restart after set-up completed with error 0x1900101-0x30017

This is a New, fresh Gateway AIO machine with nothing non-standard or complicated.
