I have same problem for long time and seeing all u folks trying hard to solve this. Where is Microsoft supporting staff?
We are not using free Linux software. I paid for this and the MS should have resolved this if they are responsible enough

I have downloaded the Windows 8.1 update from the store but cannot get it to install. Each time I try, I get to the point where it is "getting my devices ready", then the PC restarts to a blue screen with error message. It then tries to recover the installation, fails, then restores Windows 8. When the system boots up after this, I get a message saying:
"Couldn't update to Windows 8.1
Sorry, we couldn't complete the update to Windows 8.1. We've restored your previous version of Windows to this PC.
0xC1900101 - 0x40017"
There is n o explanation as to why the update could be completed. Any ideas how to resolve this?

Been trying this about once a month since I built my computer back on 10/17/12. I now wish that I would have waited for 8.1... sigh! In any case, each time I've tried the install it fails. Each time it fails I spend an hour researching what the problem is. This time, I found the file C:\Windows\Logs\DPX\setupact.log
The last lines of the log are:

The date/times correspond with when the install fails. Apparently it tries 3 times before it rolls back to Windows 8. I tried looking for the job.xml file but it removes it when it fails. I was hoping that it would point me to the driver that is causing the problem.. STILL WAITING FOR MICROSOFT TO PROVIDE GUIDANCE ON THIS. IT SHOULD NOT BE THIS HARD TO UPDATE, OR TO DIAGNOSE UPDATE ISSUES.
After all this time and repeated failure I got a notice in Windows Store to update to 8.1 again... is this a new build, or just another microsoft flaw ?? Does anyone know ?
If you were to be successful on the 12 attempt, Microsoft would refer to this as an "update according to plan"! I've tried at least 12 updates on a new machine.
Please, help us. I have the same problem. I had been upgrating 4 times and I could not go to 8.1, so I am back to w8. ( I don't know why the picture is in the wrong position)
