"Couldn't update to Windows 8.1 - 0xC1900101 - 0x40017"

I have downloaded the Windows 8.1 update from the store but cannot get it to install. Each time I try, I get to the point where it is "getting my devices ready", then the PC restarts to a blue screen with error message. It then tries to recover the installation, fails, then restores Windows 8. When the system boots up after this, I get a message saying:

"Couldn't update to Windows 8.1

Sorry, we couldn't complete the update to Windows 8.1. We've restored your previous version of Windows to this PC.

0xC1900101 - 0x40017"

There is n o explanation as to why the update could be completed. Any ideas how to resolve this?

    I am having the same problem when trying to upgrade from Win 8. I have a custom build machine. Originally had the problem that the system could not update the reserved partition but solved that by deleting superfluous languages to free up space only to run into this next problem - 0xC1900101 - 0x40017.

    Have tried heaps of things including registry clean-up, safe boot etc. etc,

    Have spent far too much time on this. MS can you please sort this out!!??

    Apple is looking good right now!

    .... I've tried 20+ times with all tricks. I will not reinstall the whole operating system with all the software again. If that is needed, then I just discard windows and switch to Apple...

    ... Let's all create a couple of other entries to this forum for the same problem, if that helps.

    21st time not going to be different. If you had made progress on 3rd or 4th, maybe.

    Reinstall or new computer only realistic option. You'll be doing that anyway, so if new computer part of the plan, pick the ecosystem you'll be most comfortable in. You'll need to plan on spending $ on new software if Apple. May be worth it, maybe not.

     

    if more forum entries than 62 pages worth was going to help, it would have been done at 30, don't you think?

    BeenAround: Literally take a big step back and f**k your own face. 

    1. Microsoft has been issuing several windows updates during the time as well as other manufacturers, which I have been installing. Many users report that updating something fixed the problem so it does make sense to try again after updating something. Also, when it does not really require so much effort  - the update can be just clicked and left to run for the night and see the results in the morning.
    2. Don't worry about how much it costs to switch to another ecosystem. It's not your concern.
    3. On what do you base your view on realistic options? To the fact that generally you do not have a clue what you are doing?
    4. This issue is not all over the place in the Internet, so it would be worthwhile to spread the knowledge  about this issue, since it seems that MS is unaware of this problem.
    5. Realize that I'm joking, but still very frustrated with this issue.

    My error ive fixed it, i down loaded firmware for ssd's secure erase. and now work's in raid.

    For now I can install IRT and windows 8.1 now
