I have downloaded the Windows 8.1 update from the store but cannot get it to install. Each time I try, I get to the point where it is "getting my devices ready", then the PC restarts to a blue screen with error message. It then tries to recover the installation, fails, then restores Windows 8. When the system boots up after this, I get a message saying:
"Couldn't update to Windows 8.1
Sorry, we couldn't complete the update to Windows 8.1. We've restored your previous version of Windows to this PC.
0xC1900101 - 0x40017"
There is n o explanation as to why the update could be completed. Any ideas how to resolve this?

I just finished disabling it in the BIOS again then booting into Windows to start the upgrade again, and it still failed.
It's almost as if the upgrade teases me with the mouse pointer appearing during both install/update phases, but still blue screens with this same error and IRQ Not Less or Equal.
I was able to remove the screw on the bottom of the motherboard because my case has an opening for that area, but it plug and through the IO shield, so it won't budge.
Don't mess with your hardware physically! Use your BIOS setup. Page 3-34 of your manual says you can disable both Bluetooth and Wi-Fi. Or you can have both or Wi-Fi only but not Bluetooth only. Have you got Ethernet working? If not Wi-Fi only might be the simplest change to test. E.g. if Bluetooth is the problem with your update hopefully you could get that fixed later. For all I know, you could find that ASUS may have a Windows setup program which interfaces with such settings more conveniently so you wouldn't even have to get into your BIOS screens. Check with them? Nevertheless, BIOS setup would be one place where you could do it apparently.

The update does not save a dmp file in the minidmp folder that WhoCrased looks in, I know it does right one somewhere else as I tried to review them last year, but am not having any luck with Googling it.
It's not really a card, just a component that plugs into a dedicated spot on the motherboard.

In order for me to remove the wireless "card" I would have to remove the motherboard from the case since it is secured by a screw on the bottom of the motherboard. (Asus P9X79_DELUXE).
You probably don't need to remove it to disable it. E.g. on my TouchSmart there was a physical slider switch would could do it. Then just hook up an Ethernet cable to your modem and be wired instead of wireless. Probably would be a good idea to get the router out of the picture too anyway.

Is it true that you have to have 8.1 in order to upgrade to 10?
Supposedly you could start from W7sp1. <eg>
