I finally got 8.1 to update this weekend. The only thing different I did was uninstall classic shell from my system before attempting to update. I'm not sure if that program was blocking the install or not.
"Couldn't update to Windows 8.1 - 0xC1900101 - 0x40017"
I have downloaded the Windows 8.1 update from the store but cannot get it to install. Each time I try, I get to the point where it is "getting my devices ready", then the PC restarts to a blue screen with error message. It then tries to recover the installation, fails, then restores Windows 8. When the system boots up after this, I get a message saying:
"Couldn't update to Windows 8.1
Sorry, we couldn't complete the update to Windows 8.1. We've restored your previous version of Windows to this PC.
0xC1900101 - 0x40017"
There is n o explanation as to why the update could be completed. Any ideas how to resolve this?

i recieved this code

- 0x40017"](http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/windows8_1-windows_install/couldnt-update-to-windows-81-0xc1900101-0x40017/e1ee316f-f912-43ef-92dc-ee31a5fe62d9 "I have downloaded the Windows 8.1 update from the store but cannot get it to install. as the thread says. I remvoed a usb wlan card after the first fail. After removing my realtek USB wireless lan card it worked. BUT, it's not usable in windows 8.1 so far, i haven't updated anything in 8.1 now but as soon as i insert it a big fat blue screen pops up. But i guess its a compatible issue. tho i cannot change the drivers of it since it pops up as soon as it gets stuck in and tries to install it.
Hope this helps someone in this thread trying to install windows 8.1 with a WLAN device inside your computer.

2014-03-30T22:59:38+00:00 Getting sick and tired of trying to update to 8.1, done everything i could find on this problem, to no avail.
Working from the desktop, i recently got a screen-wide message telling me to update to 8.1, also to no avail.
Guess i'll just have to wait until Microsoft gets their sh*t together... until then, good luck to all with this.
we can only hope for the first update of 8.1 which is coming very soon, if that doesn't work, i dont know what to deal with it.
