"Couldn't update to Windows 8.1 - 0xC1900101 - 0x40017"

I have downloaded the Windows 8.1 update from the store but cannot get it to install. Each time I try, I get to the point where it is "getting my devices ready", then the PC restarts to a blue screen with error message. It then tries to recover the installation, fails, then restores Windows 8. When the system boots up after this, I get a message saying:

"Couldn't update to Windows 8.1

Sorry, we couldn't complete the update to Windows 8.1. We've restored your previous version of Windows to this PC.

0xC1900101 - 0x40017"

There is n o explanation as to why the update could be completed. Any ideas how to resolve this?

    I'm still having this same error today (apr, 9).

    I'm trying to update from date release but, unfortunately, I couldn't.

    I have expected that the update 1 would fix the issue.... 

    It's amazing the complete microsoft's neglection.

    I give up.... Every time I try I lost my homework net setup and be afraid to lost everything.

    My laptop is a Asus K52jt.

    I do not have Avast. I have also tried all of the suggestions mentioned here and in the net. Like disabling everyhting, removing all devices. Updating all drivers, bios and even SSD firmware. I have also run Memtest for 3 days succersfully, so there is no memory errors.

    Aslo, my setup is quite typical and modern. So this really is a Microsoft software bug, not a problem with any of the dives, software or drivers.

    I was having the same issue, uninstalling Avast solved it. After upgrade to 8.1 re-installed avast & working fine.

    The official MS (lack of) response seems to be to try and ignore this issue, at least until the mishmash failure of Windows 8 (as it generally seems to be perceived) is replaced by the forthcoming Windows 9. There is no clear stated evidence or reassurance that they are actively working to assist their customers who have been left in this limbo.

    With luck, it is to be hoped that a Windows 8 base system (non 8.1) can upgrade straight to 9. That of course is assuming that they would wish to.

    So is this really how it is going to be? Now that the new 8.1 upgrade is available, it is only available if you have already updated to 8.1. 

    I have waited for the new 8.1 update to fix my original 8.1 update problem, but now it seems that this is not the case. 

    So how do I get Windows 8.1 running on my almost brand new very typical desktop computer?

    It has been over 6 months already and there is no solution. 

    Any help from MS?
