I have downloaded the Windows 8.1 update from the store but cannot get it to install. Each time I try, I get to the point where it is "getting my devices ready", then the PC restarts to a blue screen with error message. It then tries to recover the installation, fails, then restores Windows 8. When the system boots up after this, I get a message saying:
"Couldn't update to Windows 8.1
Sorry, we couldn't complete the update to Windows 8.1. We've restored your previous version of Windows to this PC.
0xC1900101 - 0x40017"
There is n o explanation as to why the update could be completed. Any ideas how to resolve this?

im replying to confirm that i tried this person's solution for upgrading to Windows 8.1 and it worked for me! This solution will ONLY work if you are missing the system reserved partition that for some reason disappeared when i upgraded from Windows 7 Ultimate to Windows 8 Pro.
I can't tell you how glad i am that i finally got this issue resolved. Hope this helps other people who were having the same issues.
I've bought a brand new Series 5 laptop from Samsung, It's completely up to date, as far as I can tell, yet every time I try installing Windows 8.1 I get this error.
My ol' desktop, custom build, installed Windows 8 and later the 8.1 upgrade without a glitch, my brand new laptop can't....
Very, very frustrating!
OK, so after over 6 months of waiting with my destop PC completely broken. (Power Management does not work after the restore from 8.1 upgrade etc. ) I finally giving in and started to install Windows 7.
I might try to upgrade back to 8. or 8.1, but I doubt that it will be successful.
This is really mind boggling, how MS thinks that they can survive, when other companies are making software that works. There are absolutely no problems like these with Apple or Android or Chrome OS.
Those just work, but I'm stuck with Windows for the shot while, until Android will have Photoshop.
So is this really how it is going to be? Now that the new 8.1 upgrade is available, it is only available if you have already updated to 8.1.
I have waited for the new 8.1 update to fix my original 8.1 update problem, but now it seems that this is not the case.
So how do I get Windows 8.1 running on my almost brand new very typical desktop computer?
It has been over 6 months already and there is no solution.
Any help from MS?
contacted MS tech guy for 3 times, they ran the remote assistance, every time they guaranteed it would solve the problem every time they failed, so i couldn't get help from MS in every which way.

scroll down to the nearly end of the page, there's a guy called 'Loobyluggs', he's problem sounds very like it, however i tried his way, no luck, maybe you can give it a go and let us know how it goes?
again, this is such a unforgivable flop on MS, a responsible company should be no way act like this.
