"Couldn't update to Windows 8.1 - 0xC1900101 - 0x40017"

I have downloaded the Windows 8.1 update from the store but cannot get it to install. Each time I try, I get to the point where it is "getting my devices ready", then the PC restarts to a blue screen with error message. It then tries to recover the installation, fails, then restores Windows 8. When the system boots up after this, I get a message saying:

"Couldn't update to Windows 8.1

Sorry, we couldn't complete the update to Windows 8.1. We've restored your previous version of Windows to this PC.

0xC1900101 - 0x40017"

There is n o explanation as to why the update could be completed. Any ideas how to resolve this?

    Hi Guy, Same error 0xc1900101-0x40017 

    Why microsoft doesn't create a update Windows 8.0 to 8.1.1 directly by microsoft Update ? 

    6 Month then i try to fix this issues

    PC home Made

    Intel i7 3770K

    16 Gigas RAM

    SSD Intel 520

    Nvidia GTX 680

    I've a DELL Vostro 1710 that was XP with 3Gram and upgraded last Nov to Win 8.0.

    Shortly after wards I tried upgrading to 8.1 and it failed so I left it.

    Tried again today, it past the Windows 8.1 Assistant. It said nothing about disconnecting all devices.

    I just tried downloading the build Windows 8.1 on a USB stick from here

    • however and it wouldn't accept my product Key I have, so it was valuable to have the reference from Pradeep on how to use the Windows 8 product key, that has a free upgrade to windows 8.1

    However when it booted it was win 8.0 and was only wanting to rerfresh win 8.0

    So restarted the Store upgrade to win 8.1 with all devices disconnected - except internet ethernet

    Took about 20min to go through Gathering Info, preparing to restart, 

    restart

    then a flash of a lilac screen "Your PC ran into a problem and... " then missed the rest as it restarted.

    I know other people have asked this, are there logs anywhere.

    Seems like this failure should be left as a turd to be looked at somewhere?

    Event Viewer doesn't seem to help as to what was the failure

    As I told, I reinstalled from Win 7, but I also disabled everything that can be disabled from the bios.

    Maybe disabling USB 3.0 helped, I don't know. 

    Also, as someone said, Logitech mouses and keyboards might cause problems, so I also as a precaution used other than Logitech keyboard and mouse. 

    I don't know if these were the culprit, but might help.

    I agree with you, I also suspect that it has to do with the mobo (in my case an Asus Sabertooth X79 with an i3930 cpu).

    I do have Intel sw installed, namely Rapid Storage Technology, Watchdog Timer Driver and Management Engine Components but I haven't figured out whether I can safely uninstall or not.

    Anybody an idea?

    well I've got a very similar rig, i3930 + Asus p9x79pro, I've also got Intel Rapid Storge TEchnology software installed, but I tried to uninstall those and disable all the services, no luck, so it's got to be sitting somewhere else, but its very likely that either the intel driver or ASUS motherboard causing this.

    I want to know how to check all the update log files thoroughly so I get to know exactly which driver goes wrong, but unfortunately, all I got is vague answers.

    it will be interesting to know how long it will take MS to solve this as its already half year passed.
