can't start Windows 8.1 at all everytime it gives BSOD no matter IDE or AHCI

The User Manual I downloaded mentions something about a DVD for support but it only refers to XP, Vista and W7, so perhaps there are some newer versions you should be looking for.  Ask ASUS?

Also looks like there have been a lot of BIOS updates.  Check yours?

I encounter the BSOD when the second cold boot, now I can't start Windows 8.1 at all everytime it gives BSOD no matter IDE or AHCI, clearly something is still not right, so try this at your own risk or stay with Widnows 8 if you are stuck with 0x40017.

So far mine is good, just cold booted with no issues.

I didn't follow any thing on the links you provided and figured I will wait until the upgrade to Windows 10 to see if I can switch back to AHCI for the install.

I FINALLY SOLVED IT!!

After nearly 2 years of headache I finally got it through without resetting the system (by the way thank you MS for doing nothing)

It's basically some kind of conflict between the upgrade and your sata driver, all you need to do is set your sata driver from AHCI to IDE before upgrading to 8.1, but switch from AHCI to IDE in Windows 8 takes bit of a hassle. 

Well I just switched from AHCI to IDE in BIOS and didn't touch anything else and it installed...  wth

All the time wasted and frustration generated and this is the cause...

Now to figure out if I should mess with it to allow it to boot into AHCI,  or just wait and do it for Windows 10.

I really appologize for the delay in responding to this thread. This issue is caused by a driver bug check during second boot while installing Windows 8.1. I request you to check if all the updates are installed on the computer via Windows Update before you start with the Windows 8.1 installation. It would be great if you can provide more information regarding this issue:

1)       What is the make and model of the computer?

2)       Do you have any external devices (except the mouse and the keyboard) connected to the computer?

3)       Are you using any third party security program installed on the computer?

You may try the following methods and check if that helps.

Method 1: Disconnect all the unnecessary external devices connected to the computer (except the mouse and the keyboard)

Please disconnect all the unnecessary external devices connected to the computer (except the mouse and the keyboard) and then check if you still face this issue while installing Windows 8.1. This is to check if the issue is caused by any external devices connected to the computer.

You may also try installing all the driver updates for all the devices installed on the computer and check if that resolves the issue. You may try the next methods and let’s know the result.

Method 2: Update the Device Drivers on the Computer.

Step 1: Check the Windows updates for any latest driver updates.

Check in Windows updates if any driver updates are available. If so, install the same and check if it helps.

a)       Press “Windows Logo” + “W” keys from the keyboard.

b)       Type “Updates” in the search bar and click on “Install optional updates” from the left pane.

c)       From the “Windows Update” window, click on “Check for Updates” on the top left corner, to receive a fresh list of updates and then install all the updates listed there.

I have the same problem but the reason I can't update is because my win8 is an enterprise or volume licensed version, which is wrong cuz we were given this license from MS due to a problem with our license issue problem when we bought our comp it had a prob and MS with the license. That's a  whole different issue to much to delve into here.  but now I can't update to win 8.1 which prevents me from getting the free win10.  my wife get win10 cuz she has win7.   How do I get this resolved?  I can provide some more info on licensing problem if needed but a lot of it was done via phone so there aren't much docs unless MS has it.  But my Dell comp guy, Marco was involved.
