"Couldn't update to Windows 8.1 - 0xC1900101 - 0x40017"

I have downloaded the Windows 8.1 update from the store but cannot get it to install. Each time I try, I get to the point where it is "getting my devices ready", then the PC restarts to a blue screen with error message. It then tries to recover the installation, fails, then restores Windows 8. When the system boots up after this, I get a message saying:

"Couldn't update to Windows 8.1

Sorry, we couldn't complete the update to Windows 8.1. We've restored your previous version of Windows to this PC.

0xC1900101 - 0x40017"

There is n o explanation as to why the update could be completed. Any ideas how to resolve this?

    Hey Microsoft.

Unable to update my PC to Windows 8.1, it keeps rolling back the update attempt with error

    Couldn't update to Windows 8.1 - 0xC1900101 - 0x40017

I unplugged all external devices and try again; and update all drivers. Neither approach worked

Same error. I am using Lenovo ThinkPad Edge E330 (type 3354-3KG). No additional devices plugged in, all drivers up-to-date. Hope this will be solved soon.

I don't think it's a huge deal and of course we can wait, but the only thing that frustrates me is that these errors have been reported since June, when the Preview version was out. Now that the final version is released, we see that Microsoft did not care to solve this problem.

I'm having the same issue, my update hung badly after one of the reboots, not sure when and wouldn't move from a blank screen, no cursor. I turned it off after a while and it went to the black screen with cursor, which took me to the rollback option, which hung as well. I then tried a system restore, got an error saying no OS was installed, then restarted again and got stuck in an infinite loop of my laptop repeatedly BSOD'ing and restarting. So I tried another system restore, failed again, and restarted, this time the rollback worked and it's back the way it was a few minutes before updating.

    Using a HP Pavilion dv6, with i5 CPU, 2.53GHz, M460. 8 GB RAM, and it's a x86-64 model of it.

Just removed SteelSeries software and trying to upgrade to 8.1. Will see...

Worked for me, I'm on 8.1 now. So if you dont have a steelseries software, there can be another driver or utility that blocks installation process.
