I have downloaded the Windows 8.1 update from the store but cannot get it to install. Each time I try, I get to the point where it is "getting my devices ready", then the PC restarts to a blue screen with error message. It then tries to recover the installation, fails, then restores Windows 8. When the system boots up after this, I get a message saying:
"Couldn't update to Windows 8.1
Sorry, we couldn't complete the update to Windows 8.1. We've restored your previous version of Windows to this PC.
0xC1900101 - 0x40017"
There is n o explanation as to why the update could be completed. Any ideas how to resolve this?

I agree with augie44's reply but additionally suggest you remove all non-Microsoft drivers before updating to Win 8.1. For example, I have Asus motherboard related drivers I skipped. I just took whatever the Win 8 full install gave me. Also disconnect any additional peripherals, if you have any, before the Win 8 install. All these can be added back after updating to Win 8.1.

And you sure won't get much help from Microsoft - how many pages does this make??
If it's a new machine I would take it all the way back to zero - like you are just plugging it
in. Go to your programs and see if any pre-packaged security systems are in the programs
and thoroughly delete them. Then try the update again.
Microsoft "helper" sent me a clean disc for the 8.1 update - well, that was a laugh cause my
new machine did the same thing. I did have AVAST installed already thinking I would protect
myself first and had to completely delete it before the update "took".
**** running Microsoft can't figure out their own update, nor how to help anyone. No excuse
for this - none. Disgusting.
I've just assembled a desktop pc with windows 8 Pro, all went fast and smooth, then tried to update to win 8.1 and I'm having the same problem discussed here, what can I do? I'm loosing a lot of time, I tried all of the solution proposed here but none of them worked

I have been trying to update for 3 days now and to no avail. I have unplugged all USB devices except for the keyboard and mouse. I see posts from over a year ago of folks having the same issue. Here we are at the end of 2014 and still having the same problems. What are my options, Microsoft? Very discouraged!
