I have downloaded the Windows 8.1 update from the store but cannot get it to install. Each time I try, I get to the point where it is "getting my devices ready", then the PC restarts to a blue screen with error message. It then tries to recover the installation, fails, then restores Windows 8. When the system boots up after this, I get a message saying:
"Couldn't update to Windows 8.1
Sorry, we couldn't complete the update to Windows 8.1. We've restored your previous version of Windows to this PC.
0xC1900101 - 0x40017"
There is n o explanation as to why the update could be completed. Any ideas how to resolve this?

Running on Asus P8Z77 V Pro motherboard w/Core I5 3570K, Geforce GTX570 (16GB RAM, Vertex 4 SSD), Win 8 Pro Norwegian -> Win8,1 Pro Norwegian
I tried several suggestions after "0xC1900101 - 0x40017" , but I finaly got 8.1 up and running after disabeling the Geforce GTX570 in Device Manager and setting primary display device to iGPU in BIOS before update.
Good luck to anyone strugeling with the same problem!

I've got a fix for you all. I just did this and it worked, I'm installed and working perfectly fine. If you use an ASUS PCE-N53 wireless card, pull it out. That's it. Take it out of your PC, restart, install Windows 8.1 and zero errors. Installs fast. Shut it down, put it back in (or leave it out) and start up. All is fine.
I know not everyone will have one, but it's worth a shot. I am comfortably on 8.1 Pro after 18 hours of troubleshooting. Hope this works for some of you!
I have the same issue with a lenovo twist laptop. Takes forever to get to the blue screen, but then just reverts to windows 8. It is a core i5 with 4 gb ram and intel graphics. It is very frustrating.

I am having the same issues when trying to upgrade to Windows 8.1. I thought I would list my system specs, and steps I have taken to try and resolve the issue, as everything I have tried will still not work.
Couldn't update to Windows 8.1 - 0xC1900101 - 0x40017
System:
Gigabyte X79-UD3 rev 1.0
Intel Core I7 3930K CPU
Nvidia GTX 560 Ti
16 Gig Ram
OCZ Vertex 3 120Gig
Compro Video Mate E900F TV tuner card
Microsoft Wireless Mouse & Keyboard
Windows 8 Pro with Media Centre - 64bit
Steps taken:
Deleted all files in all "temp" folders.
Ran Virus and Spyware checks - all clean. ( using Windows Antivirus ).
Updated the bios to F16 which is the latest.
Unplugged all external devices, and updated all drivers to the latest versions.
Put all the Windows updates in, and the optional updates.
Removed the Compro Videomate TV card, and uninstalled the driver.
Have also tried a "clean boot", with nothing loaded and removed all not needed programs.
Deleted the contents of the "softwaredistribution" folder, to start with a new 8.1 upgrade download.
The system had originally been a clean install of Windows 7 Ultimate, and then I applied the Windows 8 Pro upgrade. I was then offered the upgrade with Media Centre which all installed fine, and I am not running any third party security software ( only Windows Defender/Firewall). When I first did the upgrade from Windows 7 to Windows 8 pro, I had a lot of issues with trying to get it to boot with "AHCI" enabled in the bios. I had to go through a few registry edits to finally get it to boot, and it has been running ok. I don't know what else to try, as I have pulled the system down to just a graphics card, hard drive, mouse & keyboard. Maybe is has something to do with the registry edits?
Hoping you may find what the issue is in what I have described above.

I've had experience with the BSOD with NVIDIA driver updates for Windows 8 for nearly a year, and found a workable solution, until now...
I have to use a very old driver (306.97) for my Dell Inspiron 530 with GeForce 8300 GS card. ANY driver update causes the system to freeze shortly after restart. I have to force a restart, and work very quickly to roll back the driver, and restart. I have tried every single driver update, up to and including the latest: 327.23. Same result.
I have had to disable automatic updates, and be diligent about not including ANY NVIDIA driver updates from Windows.
Now, when installing 8.1, I'm assuming it is automatically updating the NVIDIA driver to a more recent version, which is causing the exact same freezing and BSOD I've been dealing with for a long time.
The problem with the solutions presented here, is if I uninstall the old 306.97 driver I currently have, which WORKS, and install 8.1, I'm assuming it will install the most recent NVIDIA driver, which I assume will not work, and since I would have already uninstalled the only driver that does work, I won't have a driver to roll back to.
I'm not sure I want to try this...
