I have downloaded the Windows 8.1 update from the store but cannot get it to install. Each time I try, I get to the point where it is "getting my devices ready", then the PC restarts to a blue screen with error message. It then tries to recover the installation, fails, then restores Windows 8. When the system boots up after this, I get a message saying:
"Couldn't update to Windows 8.1
Sorry, we couldn't complete the update to Windows 8.1. We've restored your previous version of Windows to this PC.
0xC1900101 - 0x40017"
There is n o explanation as to why the update could be completed. Any ideas how to resolve this?

None of these have worked for me and have spent several hours trying various things IN ADDITION TO all of the above MS-Engineering notes.

Was that an external drive you reonnected? If yes, how was it attached?
I had similar issues trying to upgrade my Win 8 Pro to 8.1. Initially, had an I/O error 0xc00000e9. Later, it was another (I didn't document it). Removed all connection but mouse & keyboard --same result -- Return to 8.0. Did a "repair" -- same. Did a "refresh" -- same. Lost a lot of saved email history when outlook was removed.
Then, on a "let's do something" lark, I disconnected & reconnected my 1 TB HDD. Voila!!! IT Worked. 8.1 installed without further problems.
Next task(s) is reinstalling all the programs that were removed during "refresh".
I hope this helps someone.
Unfortunately for me, after the update downloads and starts gathering information, I'm asked to reboot like normal. but then after the reboot the update bombs at 0%
