This same error happened to me too on a custom rig I built. This isn't making M$'s reputation look any better. What's worse is that this error arose from a prior mishap in the Preview edition that hasn't even been fixed yet. M$ has got some explaining to do.
"Couldn't update to Windows 8.1 - 0xC1900101 - 0x40017"
I have downloaded the Windows 8.1 update from the store but cannot get it to install. Each time I try, I get to the point where it is "getting my devices ready", then the PC restarts to a blue screen with error message. It then tries to recover the installation, fails, then restores Windows 8. When the system boots up after this, I get a message saying:
"Couldn't update to Windows 8.1
Sorry, we couldn't complete the update to Windows 8.1. We've restored your previous version of Windows to this PC.
0xC1900101 - 0x40017"
There is n o explanation as to why the update could be completed. Any ideas how to resolve this?

2013-10-19T23:11:07+00:00 Also seeing this error, although rather than a blue screen I get blank screens. Same error code reported when the system comes back up (after reverting 8.1 update). Also have a Samsung mSATA drive as a point of interest.
Graphics drivers have always been flakey on this machine (ATI Radeon HD 7700). Used to have all sorts of problems even shutting the thing down.

2013-10-19T20:42:00+00:00 it seems 8.1 is incompatible with too many drivers. What you couldn't test this first Microsoft?

2013-10-19T20:38:54+00:00 well, looks like we are finally getting thru, the win8.1 update has been temporarily removed from store due to a limited number of people reporting problems. I guess the entire Microsoft community is a limited number of people
