"Couldn't update to Windows 8.1 - 0xC1900101 - 0x40017"

I have downloaded the Windows 8.1 update from the store but cannot get it to install. Each time I try, I get to the point where it is "getting my devices ready", then the PC restarts to a blue screen with error message. It then tries to recover the installation, fails, then restores Windows 8. When the system boots up after this, I get a message saying:

"Couldn't update to Windows 8.1

Sorry, we couldn't complete the update to Windows 8.1. We've restored your previous version of Windows to this PC.

0xC1900101 - 0x40017"

There is n o explanation as to why the update could be completed. Any ideas how to resolve this?

Hi,

I also have this issue.

On the Blue Screen, the error message is "SYSTEM_SERVICE_EXCEPTION - win32k.sys"

And then I have exactly the same error code: 0xC1900101 - 0x40017

-I unplugged every devices on my laptop (including the mouse)

-All my drivers are updated

My computer: laptop ASUS N71Vg

-Intel Core 2 Duo T6600 @2,2GHz

-4GB RAM

-Nvidia GT220M

-Ethernet Qualcomm Atheros AR8131 PCI-E Gigabit

-Intel Centrino Wireless-N 1000

-Intel ICH9M-E

-HD Hitachi

Windows 8 Professionnal (downloaded via MSDN, RTM version) - x64 / Dual boot with Ubuntu 13

Samsung Chronos series 7 laptop. Install of 8.1 seemed to go ok until reboot. Then got stuck in a reboot loop and finally got f10 to respond during one cycle with option to boot from dvd. Chose hard disk and got the message that 8.1 install failed, restoring 8.0. Then booted up ok in 8.0, and everything seemed normal. Shut down overnight. On restart - boot loop started again, but this time no f key will respond. £1000 laptop now a paperweight...

Hi - one day later and not much further forward. No amount of mashing shift f8 gets me into safe mode. Seems all function keys are not functioning... Anyway boot loop is slightly changed (changing?) After Samsung logo comes the wee blue window as before, but now sometimes two spots appear as though the rotating I'm busy signal is about to start. Also sometimes - not always, the "preparing Automatic Repair" is displayed under the window, and again it varies between one, two and three spots before the blue screen with the error message that disappears before it can be read. Then back through the cycle. Have decided to leave it cycling in case there is a hope of slow advance. (Undue optimism - maybe...)

Good ole MS! This is a huge PC problem guys - pay attention!

my pc is custom made and im on all the latest drivers and i too can join the 8.1 has failed club

I am having the same issue. I tried a couple of times to install. It gets through to the second boot, up to about 86% and stalls for awhile, then there is a BSOD, with a message similar to "DRIVER_STATE_FAIL" Windows then reverts to 8 and the 0xC1900101
- 0x40017 error is displayed.
I have no third party virus or firewall installed. All drivers are as up to date as can be. Windows Update says its all updated.

Samsung 840 SSD

Zboard keyboard and steel series mouse

Nvidia GeForce GTX 770 2Gb

I am not really keen on doing a clean install or removing components. Mainly because I think it's ridiculous of Microsoft to expect customers to do this. If all the drivers are working fine under 8, shouldn't it be fine under 8.1?
