"Couldn't update to Windows 8.1 - 0xC1900101 - 0x40017"

For Lenovo users - I found this on their company website regarding 8.1 updates.  You will see there are a number of models which they are recommending not to upgrade.  Counting all the models I assume, just here, there are hundreds if not thousands of Lenovo laptop users who have been affected.  And so we wait for at least an acknowledgement...

Notes:

• Ideapad can only support the current preloaded hardware and software configuration. Therefore, depending on a specific configuration, it might not be recommended to upgrade your computer. That is because some hardware issues cannot be resolved currently.
• It is not recommended to upgrade the following models to Windows® 8.1 because some VGA related issues cannot be solved by the vendor, currently.
  • U310, U410, U510, U410 Touch, U310 Touch;
  • Z500 Touch, Z500, Z400, Z400 Touch, Z380, Z480, Z580, Z485, Z585;
  • S300, S400, S400u, S400 Touch, S405, S206, G485, G585, N480.
• The following models do not support upgrade to Windows® 8.1:
  • Y480, Y485, and Y580 with the SSD+HDD configuration;
  • S206 equipped with CPU other than E450, E300, E1-1200, E2-1800, or C60.
• Yoga 11 is equipped with a Windows® RT system and only supports upgrade from Windows Store.

I have updated two desktop PC's and one laptop to Windows 8.1 without issue. In fact I was really pleased how well the update went and so filled with optimism I then tried the same on my HP Proliant Microserver N40L. It has had not hardware fitted and no divers installed, apart from those installed by Windows 8.

So I expected this one to be a very simple update, well I was wrong.

I did the usual of ensuring all Windows updates were done and the HD checked for errors  etc etc etc and yet the server will hang each and every time at the "getting devices ready" stage 25%. It will sit there for ages and do nothing, apart from fail to install with an error message of "0xC1900101" and the apology and restore of Windows 8.

Apart from the complete irritation at having to download this update four times now (once for each machine - grrr grrr), well actually five times as I downloaded it again for the server just to make sure that it had not become corrupted, I can't get passed the getting devices ready stage on a completely vanilla HP microserver with all the checks and updates done prior to the attempted installation.

No anti virus, apart from Windows defender, or other running software is involved with the failed update.

I have had to give up for now with the server update due to the above.

MS - you really should have made an ISO for consumers to burn to a disk or a USB stick rather than having them download almost 4GB a time for each machine that they have Windows 8 installed on.

Also what the heck does "0xC1900101" mean to me as an end user...? Surely a more friendly type of message with some informative explanation should be possible by now...?

I've also tried uninstalling drivers, clean boot, disabling everything, updating BIOS to no avail.

I have the same issue.

I have a MSI GT-70 2OC notebook with all the drivers updated and still the update freezes during the final preparations.

I've disconnected any attached devices to the notebook and still froze.

Also got an odd blue screen error related to driver_powerstate_failure or something like that before rebooting and doing the final preparation.

I've read through the posts (2nd page) and looks like those with SteelSteries drivers/software installed had the same issue and after uninstalling the drivers/software they got it to work.

I've wasted 4 hours for this update and don't have time right now to try again with this approach but will see later.

I have downloaded the Windows 8.1 update from the store but cannot get it to install. Each time I try, I get to the point where it is "getting my devices ready", then the PC restarts to a blue screen with error message. It then tries to recover the installation, fails, then restores Windows 8. When the system boots up after this, I get a message saying:

 

"Couldn't update to Windows 8.1

 

Sorry, we couldn't complete the update to Windows 8.1. We've restored your previous version of Windows to this PC.

 

0xC1900101 - 0x40017"

 

There is n o explanation as to why the update could be completed. Any ideas how to resolve this?

Folks, I too upgraded to 8.1, my PC and after reboot & running for a while I rebooted again & got BSOD. Gigabyte MB Z77 with i7K, 16G Ram & no other boards installed. Had been running 7 SP1 & then loaded my $39 Win 8 key then all updates to 8 all ok then 8.1. Today 21/10/13 1230hrs Any attempt to download my free 8.1 upgrade fails before it starts with " Something went wrong" & Try Again?

Currently I have Win 8 & all the Gigabyte Win 8 drivers installed & I have fibre to the house so the very slow 8 & 8.1 downloads must be the overloaded MS Servers?
