"Couldn't update to Windows 8.1 - 0xC1900101 - 0x40017"

I have downloaded the Windows 8.1 update from the store but cannot get it to install. Each time I try, I get to the point where it is "getting my devices ready", then the PC restarts to a blue screen with error message. It then tries to recover the installation, fails, then restores Windows 8. When the system boots up after this, I get a message saying:

"Couldn't update to Windows 8.1

Sorry, we couldn't complete the update to Windows 8.1. We've restored your previous version of Windows to this PC.

0xC1900101 - 0x40017"

There is n o explanation as to why the update could be completed. Any ideas how to resolve this?

Has anyone seen this, it only seem to appear if you drill down through to answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum and click on Error 0xC1900101 – 0x40017 when installing Windows 8.1, I'm glad to see that Microsoft is finally acknowledging this is  an issue and collecting data. We may see a fix soon.

Thanks Microsoft, when you fix the bugs please make the 8.1 update  available as a downloadable ISO or at  the very least a Windows update package Please! Listen to your customers we are the ones that support Windows. Microsoft  has a great opportunity to show everyone that they listen to their customers and give them what they reasonably  ask for. This is how you build customer loyalty and future sales revenue.

    Submitted for your consideration MIcrosoft

I ran a refresh with documents saved then after windows restored itself I ran updates once.  Then downloaded windows 8.1 again and this time it did the install. The only problem is that I need to reinstall all the programs again.

I'm dealing with the same update fail. I made sure that Windows 8 had all current updates, unplugged all devices, and I updated all my device drivers to the latest. None of this made a difference, except to enrage me. I'm done with Microsoft, goodbye Windows!

FIXED! - I've actually fixed this problem when I came across an article saying it had something to do with the Steelseries Engine. So if you own any steelseries products like Mouse/Keyboard, you need to uninstall the steel series engine and then the update will work.

I've tried everything and this was the only thing that worked for me. I didn't even bother with disconnecting anything attached to my system or disabling anti virus. The culprit was Steelseries Engine.

I'll be posting this around hoping this will help everyone.

    Eric
