"Couldn't update to Windows 8.1 - 0xC1900101 - 0x40017"

I have downloaded the Windows 8.1 update from the store but cannot get it to install. Each time I try, I get to the point where it is "getting my devices ready", then the PC restarts to a blue screen with error message. It then tries to recover the installation, fails, then restores Windows 8. When the system boots up after this, I get a message saying:

"Couldn't update to Windows 8.1

Sorry, we couldn't complete the update to Windows 8.1. We've restored your previous version of Windows to this PC.

0xC1900101 - 0x40017"

There is n o explanation as to why the update could be completed. Any ideas how to resolve this?

Well, I can add that Microsoft support is pretty darn good (I'll give them that much).  They spent three hours on the phone while controlling my PC.  While almost everything they tried I had done previously, I was surprised at the patience and diligence of support to sit there through each of my lengthy boots and the long process of watching 8.1 trying to install.

My issue has been escalated to tier 2 support, and they are going to continue with me tomorrow.  I'm trying to take notes to see if there is any one thing that stands out in what they do (assuming this gets fixed).

I have the same problem on my XPS 15. Do you know if there is a solution yet?

In my case Acer V5-573G notebook with Windows 8.

Tried many times update with same error :

    DRIVER_POWER_STATE_FAILURE

    Couldn't update to Windows 8.1 - 0xC1900101 - 0x40017

Finally update the NVIDIA GeForce Driver to latest version 331.58. Succeed in updating to Windows 8.1 this time.

Microsoft could do better. At lease be more informative to say which device has conflict.

OK after trying with the new update, I tried this process a second time, still no joy, same failure, same error code and a virtually identical memory dump.

My thoughts are also that it is a driver problem, but I think Microsoft could design the system to recover from the failure with less obscure reporting of the cause.   It should report which driver caused the problem.  Further I am a little confused as to how an incremental upgrade could render a previously working driver so "buggy" that it throws a BSOD.  While the problem might be 3rd party vendors, the OS should be able to handle errors in such a fashion as to allow the user to pursue solutions instead of throwing obscure error codes with no reference as to whet they really are reporting.

I also found a new update, labeled as "important", installed it but no joy.  Same failure as before with the same error code.  I installed the MS SDK do I could read the memory dump from the BSOD - following is that dump.
