"Couldn't update to Windows 8.1 - 0xC1900101 - 0x40017"

I have downloaded the Windows 8.1 update from the store but cannot get it to install. Each time I try, I get to the point where it is "getting my devices ready", then the PC restarts to a blue screen with error message. It then tries to recover the installation, fails, then restores Windows 8. When the system boots up after this, I get a message saying:

"Couldn't update to Windows 8.1

Sorry, we couldn't complete the update to Windows 8.1. We've restored your previous version of Windows to this PC.

0xC1900101 - 0x40017"

There is n o explanation as to why the update could be completed. Any ideas how to resolve this?

    Seagate Momentus XT 500GB SSHD

    Windows 8 64 Bit

    All Windows & device updates applied; BIOS updated.

    All startup services disabled via msconfig; clean boot tried.

    No peripherals attached.

    Error 0xc1900101 0x20017 when updating to 8.1

    At least 8 attempts.

    I could try that again, though I tried it on at least 3 of my prior 15 or so attempts. 

    At this point, I'm not going to try further.  I think it is time to a=wait for Microsoft to give us the real answer or some real tools to solve this issue.  It is a shame they are so silent on what is a very widespread problem.  It is  obvious that there are hundreds, if not thousands of us with this issue and Microsoft is aware that we are having problems but all we hear is silence.  Maybe they are busy working on www.healthcare.gov ;)

    I may be wrong, but I am also a little concerned how stable 8.1 will be on this particular machine, given how much trouble I am having getting it to install.

    It appears you have it almost whipped but left all the drivers and services ENABLED.

    I'd give it al least another shot and see if any ideas here work...

    I was successful after removing drivers mentioned and Disabling ALL SERVICES and Start-up items.

    The disabling of the Network Card mentioned later in the thread didn't work for me but there are no definitive answers yet so keep trying and let us know.

    Update.

    After the attempt above I found an update to Intel Rapid Storage Technology drivers issued August 8.  This version is listed for Windows 8.1 and was not listed in the drivers specifically for my mother board.  I installed it and attempted the update - still no Joy and absolutely no change in the update behavior.

    I'm done. Two weeks , no success, no help.  This machine remains Windows 8 until I read of an actual fix.  I would think that the logs would clearly indicate where the failure is, but I can't find it.
