"Couldn't update to Windows 8.1 - 0xC1900101 - 0x40017"

I have downloaded the Windows 8.1 update from the store but cannot get it to install. Each time I try, I get to the point where it is "getting my devices ready", then the PC restarts to a blue screen with error message. It then tries to recover the installation, fails, then restores Windows 8. When the system boots up after this, I get a message saying:

"Couldn't update to Windows 8.1

Sorry, we couldn't complete the update to Windows 8.1. We've restored your previous version of Windows to this PC.

0xC1900101 - 0x40017"

There is n o explanation as to why the update could be completed. Any ideas how to resolve this?

Has anyone with a linux dual-boot successfully updated to 8.1? I've been having trouble, and I suspect that my Ubuntu partition might be part of the problem.

See my main post with error logs here: http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/windows8_1-windows_install/error-with-windows-81-pro-upgrade-0xc1900101/7431247f-b091-4f27-8b0c-8a4d27df6db2

Thanks for the suggestions. I tried them without success. After about 15 attempts to install Windows 8.1, I finally did a  Windows Refresh, and then successfully upgraded to 8.1. All I did after the Refresh was apply a bunch of windows updates (at least 50). Prior to attempting the upgrade, I disabled my Norton 360 Antivirus. Nothing else.

I was very pleased that the upgrade finally succeeded, but very very disappointed in the lack of Response by Microsoft's level two tech to an open case. In addition, I didn't particularly enjoy reinstalling all of my programs. Windows 8.1 seems to be running fine.

Curious. Mine's Hitachi HTS541010A9E680. Same problem. It's, of course, insufficient info for any conclusions, but let's keep this in mind. Anyone else?

Nevermind that, I mistook this thread for the 0x20017 one

After about 20 attempts to install 8.1 and trying all the solutions of this thread I've got the feeling that the problem is an incompatibility between 8.1 and my HDD.

So I'm looking for an update of the firmware with no success. It's a Hitachi HTS541616J9SA00.

Can someone find this firmware ? Thanks!
